General Notes: Husband - John Beecroft
John Beecroft was born June 16, 1842 in a small suburb of Buffalo New York, called Brooklyn. When John was about nine years of age, about 1851 or so, the family moved back to Upper Canada, and settled again in Caradoc. John lived on and worked his parent's pioneer homestead farm. John was married April 6, 1870 in Caradoc to Mary Elizabeth Plain. Mary was born April 6 (Feb. 3), 1842 in Sheffield Township, Addington County, Ontario. The 1871 Census shows John and Mary farming in Caradoc Township. John purchased his father's farm February 19, 1869 prior to John Sr.'s death in November of 1871. John and Mary farmed and raised their first three children there, in the log house. Tragically, the house burnt down about 1878. John and Mary sold the property and bought another farm south of the Thames River, in Southwold Township, Elgin County. The 1881 Census shows John 38, Mary 38, James 9, Jacob 7, John 4 and Rebecca 2, living at home on the Southwold farm.
John died January 7, 1901 at home on the farm after suffering a paralytic stroke two weeks earlier and was buried in Cowal McBrides Cemetery, Dunwich Township, Elgin County.

Notes: Marriage (Mary Elizabeth Plain):
At the time of his marriage to Mary Plain John was a laborer in Brooklyn, NY. Strangely in the marriage registration although his parents name is given as Barefoot (a name which occurs in the 1861 and 1871 censuses of Caradoc), John's name is given as something like Beaucrofth. This matches to the John Becroft family present in the 1861 census. In the marriage registration his birthplace is given as Caradoc, but as the Becroft family only appears in Caradoc for the 1861 census, his birthplace of the US makes more sense.
