Svdney, December 17.
A terrible explosion occurred at Davy & Sands' foundry, at Pyrmont, this morning. Two men, named William Camp and Montague Beecroft, were engaged in making what is known as spirit paint, when, owing to some cause at present unexplained, a fearful explosion occurred, the seat of the outburst apparently being the pots containing the spirit paint. A great sheet of flame envel- oped the two workmen, reduced every stitch of their clothing to ashes, and burnt the men so badly that little hopes of their recovery are entertained. A portion of the workshop was wrecked by the explosion, but fortunately none of the other workmen were injured.• Event: The Argus, 18 Dec 1889. EXPLOSION IN A SYDNEY

THE FATAL EXPLOSION AT PYRMONT.
Tho City Coronor, Mr. J. C. Woore, J.P., held an inquest yesterday relative to the deaths of the two men. William Clamp and Montague Beecroft, who died at the Sydney Hospital from the effects of burns re- ceived by an explosion at Pyrmont on Tuesday.
John Sands, engineer, deposed that he was solo pro- prietor of the Albion Engineering Works, in Harris street, Pyrmont ; the Neptune Paint Company carried on operations in the same premises as witness occupied ; William Clamp was a partner in the company, and Montague Beecroft was a labourer assisting him; Clamp was 49 years of age; his life was insured for £200, and he bad left some landed property ; about 11 o'clock on Tuesday Clamp was engaged making a patent paint ; Beecroft was close by ; witness had been speaking to the two deceased a few minutes previously, but had left them to go to another part of the works; he sud- denly heard a thud as if a heavy weight had fallen, and he, immediately rushed to the shed where the two deceased had been working ; he there saw Clamp on the ground, his clothes being in flames witness also saw Beecroft jump through the window; his clothing was also in flames ; with the assistance of workmen from the surrounding shops the flames were extinguished ; Beecroft was in such agony that he jumped into a cask of water; witness telephoned to the Sydney Hospital telling the authori-ties to have everything prepared, as they were sending two men over, seriously injured; the men were then convoyed to the hospital in a van; the deceased were both aware that there was a risk attached to making the paint; tbe paint was made by a secret process; both men were extremely careful, and neither could assign any probable cause for the explosion; the place where the steam was generated for the manufacture of the paint was about 20 yards distant from the shed where deceased were working,
Dr. T. F. Wade stated that the deceased were admitted to the Sydney Hospital shortly after noon on Tuesday, in a state of collapse ; everything possible was done for them, but they sank and died-Clamp about 4 o'clock on Wednesday morning, and Beecroft an hour later; death was due to shock to the system consequent upon injuries received.
Richard Roberts gave evidence corroborating the testimony of Mr. Sands with regard to extinguishing the flames: and the jury returned a verdict of acci-dental death.• His obituary was published in The Sydney Morning Herald on 19 Dec 1889. DEATHS.
