Third of six children of Seth Becraft and Clarinda Weldon. Born in Troy NY, his father died when he was about 13. His mother moved the family to NYC where she worked as a nurse and changed the name to Becroft. James married Mary Jane Whittaker of Massachusetts on November 3rd, 1857. They had ten children including James Seth (died in childhood), Emma Florence (Burbidge), Clarinda Esabella (died in childhood), William Ebben, James Henry Jr, George Samuel, Mary Elizabeth, Charles Oscar (died in childhood), Silas Weldon Sr. and Albert Whittaker. He was a stage carpenter for the Booth Theatre in NYC. 3

James H. Becroft, aged seventy years died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert S. Clark, about 4 o'clock this morning after a long illness with liver trouble.
Mr. Becroft had a bad fall about six months ago and had been ailing ever since that time. He was born in New York city in 1828, and came to Meriden about thirty-three years ago, since which time he has resided here with the exception of about nine years spent in Wallingford. He served as a private in the Mexican war. He leaves several children, Mrs. John W. Burbridge and Mrs. Robert S. Clarck, of this city; William E. Henry and Silas W. Becroft, of Wallingford, Albert W. Becroft of Waterbury and George S. Becroft of Ansonia. A large circle of friends will mourn his loss.
Funeral services will be held at 247 West Main street to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. A. T. Randall officiating. The funeral will be strictly private, but friends may view the remains tomorrow from 12 o'clock to 1:30; interment in Center street cemetery, Wallingford.
Mr. Becroft was a stage carpenter of national reputation forty years ago, having charge of the stage of a number of New York theatres. He was the stage carpenter at the Meriden opera house when it fist opened and before that filled the same position at Town hall.

James H. Becroft, aged 70 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Robert S. Clark, 247 West Main street, this morning of enlargement of the liver, having received a fall six months ago which brought on the disease. He was born in New York city and came to Meriden thirty-three years ago and lived here till nine years ago when he went to Wallingford. He remained there up to two months ago when he was brought to this city. He fought in the Mexican war having enlisted when he was 18 years old. He left two daughters, Mrs. Clark and Mrs. John W. Burbridge of this city, and five sons, William E., James Henry Jr., and Silas of Wallingford, Albert W. of Waterbury, and George S. of Ansonis. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. A. T. Randall officiating. Interment in the Center Street cemetery, Wallingford. The funeral will be private, but friends can view the remains from 12 o'clock to 1:30 tomorrow.
