General Notes: Husband - Henry Baycroft
Henry went with his friend Thomas Herritage to his home and there met Helen and in due course a wedding was arranged. The nearest church was at Middleton, just west of Bradford and there they were married. A legend has it that Thomas became a little too merry during the wedding celebrations and rode his horse into the church.
Henry and Helen made their home at Lot 9, Concession 6, Tosorentio Township, Simcoe County. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at Bond Head on Nov. 9, 1898. They celebrated the 60th Anniversary at the Wilkinson home, on the farm where they started their life together. It was a lovely fall day and those assembled had a wonderful time. especially the young fry. There were so many present that there had to be two sittings for dinner and the children were given the first turn at dinner and turned out to play.
Several stories might be mentioned at this time, though the writer cannot vouch for the truth of them. There is the one about a large bear. Apparently ther was a fairly high railfence around the small yard in which the small children played. Grandmother returned from a chore some place to see a bear, front paws on the top rail, looking at two small boys. And wolves were plentiful, and they howled. One night Grandmotheer was home alone with small children and a small Terrier dog. The dog happened to be outside. The wolves, howling all the while, chased him so closely that he, frantic, dashed through the window into the cabin, and the shutters had to be slammed to keep the wolves from following the dog.
It is said that Henry's skin was very tender and that to protect his hands when doing rough work he wore gloves. This sensitive skin was passed on to some of his family. He was said to have beautiful white hair and beard. Some of the grandchildren remembered sitting on his knee making tiny braids in his beard.
