Lorenzo Stansbury. -- Have been a keeper in the kitchen in Mount Pleasant Prison since the 22nd day of October last. When I first came into the kitchen, I took up the same plan as I had understood my predecessors had adopted. But I found that the boiled rice was not generally eaten, but returned. I commenced, however, giving them dry rations, bread and meat, which they seemed to like better. When I first went in we had but few vegetables of any kind, except turnips. Now we have potatoes, beets, carrots, onions, and cabbage. When I came in there were 35 barels of pork shoulders, which the men complained of, and which I did not consider was quite what it ought to be. The morning meal now is bread, meat, and rye-coffee: the dinner is beef or pork, with potatoes or some other vegetables, beets or carrots. They have had fresh meat about twice in ten days-- a little oftener than once a week. The meat has been beef, consisting of "cargo", "clean meat", "shin", and "check." There is a ration of bread: the ration consists of half a pound of bread. Such convicts as require more, are served with extra rations of bread. The quantity of meal is increased about one-half. The ration in the morning is the same in quantity as at noon, being about three quarters of a pound to each meal. There were four or five tierces of bad rice, which had worms, which I endeavored to clean by sifting, and then I mixed about one-third of that with other good rice. The quantity of molasses is 15 gallons to 700 men-- being a little less than half a gill to each man. The quantity of much is at least three pints to a common ration-- the extra, two quarts. The evening meal is mush and molasses, without any change.

As to the barrels, Mr. Radford gave me to understand that if I could take care of the good ones for him, I might have the old ones. As to any meat or other articles which I might want, I was to keep an account and pay for the same. The rice I have not used for about a month, as the Inspectors said it was not good. LORENZO STANSBURY.

...
The parents of our subject, David C. and Cornelia (Conklin) Smith, were among the earliest settlers of the Upper Clove. The father was a son of David and Abbie (Clark) Smith, and the latter a daughter of Davaid and Fannie (Knight) Conklin. During his residence in Brooklyn, February 9, 1854, William K. Smith was united in marriage with Miss Rachel Ann Stansbury, who was born in Peekskill, N.Y. When she was a girl of twelve years her parents, Lorenzo D. and Sarah P. (Valentine) Stansbury, moved to Brooklyn, where her father was engaged as an architect and builder, an occupation that seems to have been a favorite one in the family for many generations back.

Lorenzo D. Stansbury was a son of John and Rachel Stansbury, and his wife was a daughter of John and Ann (Fosdick) Valentine. THe maternal grandfather of Mrs. Smith, Mr. Valentine, was born in Flushing, L.I., and was impressed by the British into their army during the Revolutionary War. At the earliest opportunity he escaped to American lines, and going to General Washington offered to serve for his own country. It was a hazardous undertaking, as he did not know bu that he might be executed for wearing British uniform, but his offer was accepted and he entered the Colonial ranks. He served in a cavalry regiment for seven years and six months, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war after which he returned to Long Island.

The wife of this revolutionary hero was born at Oyster Bay, L.I. in 1764 and died September 16, 1827. She was one of six children born to Samuel Fosdick, Jr., and his first wife, Deborah, daughter of Morris and Deborah Shadbolt, the former of whome was a man of prominence in Colonial days. Mr. Fosdick was born in New Longon, Conn., March 11, 1710, and was eight years old when his father moved to Charlestown, Mass., and twenty when he settled at Oyster Bay, L.I. His occupation was that of a carpenter and builder.
