• His obituary was published in The Christian Advocate, Volume 79. The Rev. John H. Stansbury

John H. Stansbury, after an illness of nearly a year, died at his home in Northport, N.Y., May 10, 1904. He was born at Flushing, N.Y., Oct. 16, 1827. Brother Stansbury came of two of the old American families, tracing his ancestry back to the settlement of Baltimore, when the first Stansbury landed with Lord Baltimore, and to a soldier of the Revolutionary War on the mother's side. In his father's employ, he learned the carpenter's trade, and up to thirty-five years of age was known in Brooklyn as a prominent builder. In October, 1848, he was married to Mary Jane Barber, of Brooklyn, and five children were born to them, three of whom -- John, Joseph, and Mrs. Cecelia Burr--with his widow survive. His parents, Lorenzo D. and Sarah V. Stansbury, were active workers in the old Carlton Avenue (now Simpson) Methodist Episcopal Church. Here John was converted one year after his marriage. Immediately the family altar was erected, and he also entered into church work. The leader of two classes, a local preacher, and general church worker, he was urged by interested friends to enter the Itinerancy. Although from the time of his conversion he had experienced the call of God, yet he hesitated several years before surrendering to His will. A year of sweeping revival rewarding his tentative trial of the work, he was convinced that God really wanted him. So in his thirty-fifth year he successfully passed the examinations and became a minister and member of New York East Conference. From the beginning his work was successful in soul-winning as well as in the "edification of the saints." During thirty-three years of effective service he filled ably and conspicuously some of the best appointments. Hundreds look to him as their spiritual father. Said one of the prominent members, "There is only one Benjamin Adams and one John Stansbury in the Conference." Like the other, he was ever bubbling over with good cheer, His Gospel was savored with an irresistible humor. When the end finally came his splendid physique and dominating will did not surrender easily to humanity's enemy. He fought the battle to the last ditch, as he had fought the evil one in many a revival campaign. But when death conquered it was an hour of victory for the aged veteran. During a last midnight vigil he said to his son, "Joe, how good it would be to be there! It is all victory, victory, victory!" And to the family he said, "I want you all to meet me there." Before the spirit passed to the God whogave it he had a vision of his sainted mother. They heard him communing with her, and caught these words, "Mother, take me home. I want to go so badly." Thus passed away one of God's faithful warriors. When the "roll is called up yonder" John Stansbury will answer to his name. The funeral service was held in St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church, Northport, N.Y., and was largely attended by ministers and laity.
