Events

• Arrival: 1785.

• He had a residence in 1785. Sometime between 1785 and 1800, John Mahaffey built a log home at what became 219 Circle Road, Greer, S.C.

During the bus tour, we walked to the
Mahaffey family cemetery in the horse pasture
and saw three fieldstones marking slave graves
in the nearby woods. Rev. Griffith said when
his father William Pinckney Griffith bought the
Mahaffey property, he was told that he could
clear a wooded area if he would put concrete
coping around the Mahaffey family gravesite.
William built wooden forms and poured
concrete to make a coping, then with his finger
or a nail or stick, he wrote the names of John
and Leah Mahaffey in the drying concrete.
William was told that graves for John and Leah Mahaffey were marked by the two fieldstones in
one section of the cemetery. Another fieldstone is in an adjoining plot, but we don't know who is
buried there. John's parents, John Mahaffey Sr. and Phoebe, were probably buried on the farm
but we don't know where. John and Phoebe Mahaffey are the parents of Barksdale Snow's wife
Mary. Their son John Mahaffey and his wife Leah are also our ancestors--grandparents of Mary
Ellen Greer (1855-1941) who married Henry Barksdale Snow.

In the name of God Amen, I John Mahaffey of the state and district aforesaid being of perfect mind and memory but weak of body and knowing that it is apointed for all men once to die do therefore make and ordain this to be my last will and testament that is to say first I recomment my soul to God who gave it and my body to be buried in a decent Christian manner. As touching my worldly Estate wherewith God hath blessed me after the payment of my just debts I will and bequeath it in toto without any reservation to my beloved wife Phebe Mahaffey during her natural life or widowhood (viz) all my lands and tenements live stock furniture and utensals of every discription cash in hand notes bonds debts due to me etc. The said Phebe to enjoy without let or hinderance or control the ad estate with all its rents profits issues etc during as aforesaid the term of her life or widowhood but at the death or at the marriage of my said wife Phebe Mahaffey it is then my will and desire that all my estate both real and personal, with its profits rents debts etc as it my then be shall be sold on a credit of 12 months or longer at the discretion of my executors and then to be equally divided amongst my children my son Johns part being subject to a deduction of one undred dollars for the land on which he now resides - it is also my will and desire and I do appoint and name my soninlaw Doctr Adam R Lister and my son Carter Mahaffey to be my administrators to carry this will into effect and to superintend the concerns of my estate for the benefit of my said wife Phebe Mahaffey, according to te true intent and meaning herof, given under my hand and seal this 12 day of March on Thousand Eight hundred and twenty three.
