Why wasn't the name of Barksdale Snow's wife placed on the monument in the Snow family cemetery? John Robertson Snow and Nancy Rowe Snow could have been buried in the cemetery with only fieldstones as markers. The monument may have been added later by descendants who didn't know the name of Barksdale's wife. Are Barksdale and his wife buried in that cemetery, or does the inscription mean only to honor them? Other relatives may be buried in the cemetery but no longer have fieldstones there to mark their graves.

Some research notes collected by Virginia Hutchings Dobson and Eugenia Arnold Snow have no name for Barksdale's wife. Other notes list her name only as "Mary." One note seems to have provided proof for the name of Barksdale's wife. The paper appears to have been written during an interview with Jim Mahaffey (probably James S. Mahaffey, born about 1847, son of John Manning Mahaffey and grandson of John "Flint John" Mahaffey). The note says (with some punctuation added):

Barksdale's wife (was) Miss Mary Mahaffey, Mr. Jim Mahaffee's
gr. aunt, gr.Father "Flint" Jno. Mahaffee sister. Jim's father's nam Manning Mahaffe. Manning M & Madison M were both married
to Jones (Nancy & Frances). Mrs. Carolin fath was Flint John Mahaffey. Flint Jno was Madison Mahaffee father.
