Marriage Events

• Event: Courtship of "Flint John" Mahaffey and Leah Fowler

"Flint John" Mahaffey is Barksdale Snow's brother-in-law and also the grandfather of Mary Ellen Greer, who married Henry Barksdale Snow (1856-1923). Mary Ellen Greer's parents are Eda "Edy" Mahaffey and William Greer. Since John and Leah Mahaffey are direct ancestors of all of Henry Barksdale Snow's descendants, I am including the following courtship story.

Leah Fowler and her sister Rachel were twins, one of three sets of twins born to Archibald "Archie" Fowler and Edith "Edy or Eda" West. "The resemblance between some of these was so strong that lovers were sometimes deceived as the following fact will illustrate--John Mahaffee was engaged to and paying frequent visits to Leah; she being absent on the occasion of one of his visits, Rachel with that love of sport that characterized all girls of her age--dressed as near as possible like Leah and went to receive her lover for her. Wonderful to relate he did not find his mistake till he had poured endearing appellations in her ear for half an hour. He did not learn of his errors till she, who had under great effort, restrained her mirth--burst into peals of convulsive laughter, which terminated the interview."
