Returning to the effect of temperance in spring 1920, on April 2, "The Sun" reported that Mr and Mrs William Beecroft and family had moved into the Schaghticoke House, "where they will conduct a first-class boarding business." William Beecroft, born in 1884, was the son of George Beecroft and Nettie VanSchaack. George, William, and many of the Beecrofts were local butchers. William had several other occupations: carpenter, railroad worker, and then hotel keeper. He married Caroline Lenihan in 1906. She was also a local person, born in 1887, daughter of John and Mary Lenihan. Before her marriage she worked in the woolen mill.
By the 1925 NY Census, the Beecrofts were living separately. William, back to working as a butcher, was living with a cousin. Carolyn continued as the operator of the hotel, the Schaghticoke House, on Main Street. Three of their children lived with her, along with four lodgers. She was listed as the owner through the 1930 census, but had no occupation in the 1940 US Census. An article in the Salem "Press" on September 10, 1931 reported a fire in a garage at the rear of the property. It was operated as a public garage by John L. Casey. He was former operator of the Schaghticoke House, and ran the garage under the auspices of the Beecrofts. Carolyn died in 1948, but I could not find her obituary, even though she was extremely active in the community, especially in the American Legion Auxiliary. Her brother had served in World War I, hence her involvement in the Auxiliary. I did find that her estate of $6000 was divided between her daughters Leone Reilly and Mary Helen Hamilton of Schaghticoke.• He appeared on the Federal census in 1930 in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer, New York, United States.
