• His obituary was published in 1908. Robert Willard Becroft
At the Good Samaritan hospital, Vincennes, Indiana, Robert W. Becroft, a
native of West Finley township, son of Thomas and Mary Alexander Becroft of
near Lagonda, died at six o'clock Sunday evening, August 30, 1908, of
appendicitis, in his 24th year. His father and sister Fanny were with him
at the time.
Robert was born near Burnsville, June 10, 1883. He resided with his
parents near Coon Island four years, but the past three years the family
home has been near Lagonda. He was employed in the South Franklin oil and
gas field. Last November he went to Lawrenceville, Ill., and was employed
as tool dresser principally by Contractor Gus Gainor, with whom he boarded.
He was home a couple of weeks last July. August 16th he wrote home that he
never felt better. On the 19th he was taken to the Good Samaritan hospital,
Vincennes, only a few miles distant on the Indiana-Illinois Stat boundary
line, and an operation performed at once. His father and sister went to him
right away after being notified. It was found that a second operation was
necessary, and it was performed Saturday. From it he did not rally. The
remains were prepared for shipment and brought to his late home Monday
evening.
Robert was a steady, reliable, industrious, strictly temperate young man,
quite, of a genial disposition, and had many friends in the various sections
where he had lived and labored.
He is survived by his parents, six sisters and two brothers,--Mrs. J.J.
Mounts and Mrs. Samuel Tanner, of Buffalo township; Mrs. L.W. Walter, of
Jersey City, N.J.; Miss Etta, graduate nurse of Washington hospital, Lizzie,
Fanny, Russell and Roy, and home.
The funeral service was held at 10 o'clock, Wednesday forenoon, conducted
by Rev. Faris, pastor of Liberty M.E. Chapel, Vankirk's Station. The
interment was in Claysville Cemetery.
