Mel worked at the Ontario Hospital, St Thomas, Ontario in the laundry. His first love was music and he was an organist choir director at various rural churches, ending his career at Union United Church, Union, Elgin County, Ontario where he was employed until his death of a heart attack. General Notes: Wife - Mary Frederica Beecroft

Mary "Frederica" Beecroft was born August 23, 1911 in Southwold Township, Elgin County. Frederica became a school teacher and taught in St. Thomas, Elgin County. She was married at age 38 on August 20, 1949 to Melville "Mel" Otis Smith. Melville was born April 17, 1916 and as a child moved with his parents to their farm in Southwold Township. After Mel and Frederica were married, they moved to St. Thomas. Frederica continued to teach school while Mel worked at St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital. Frederica was an active member of the Methodist and United Church all her life. Mel died October 7, 1976 from heart failure and was buried in Cowal McBride Cemetery. Find A Grave 209600929. Frederica died January 20, 1985 from pancreatic cancer and was buried with Mel. Frederica and Mel had no children.
