Leonard joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and began a lifelong career. He was married December 30, 1944 (1945?) at Central Baptist Church, Victoria, B.C. to Helen Rae-Arthur Buchanan. Helen was born June 20, 1920. After WW II, Leonard served in the Occupation Force in Europe. During his career, Leonard also served in Quebec, British Columbia and the Middle East. Leonard retired in 1966 and moved to Red Deer, Alberta.
