WELLSBURG - Herman Donald Groote, 81, of Wellsburg died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at the Maple Manor Nursing Home in Aplington. Services were held Monday, Sept. 1, at the Wellsburg Reformed Church with burial in Shiloh Cemetery in Wellsburg. Pastor Harold Miller and Rev. Todd Rempe officiated. Military rites were provided by Wellsburg AMVETS Post No. 91 and American Legion Post No. 213.

Herman was born June 26, 1921, in Grundy County to Harm and Annie Buskohl Groote on the family farm. He graduated from Grundy High School in 1939 and on Dec. 14, 1942, he married Junice Beecroft. He served three years in the Pacific during World War II. After service he farmed for 14 years and then became a rural mail carrier. He carried mail 13 years for Holland and 10 years for Conrad. He was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, AMVETS and the American Legion. His hobbies were golf, bowling and traveling.

He is survived by his son, Sheldon and wife DaNelle of Montezuma; a daughter-in-law Mary Groote of Arvada, Colo.; three grandchildren; two brothers, Benjamin Groote and wife Viola of Grundy Center and Roy Groote and wife Bernice of Dike; and a sister Mary DeBerg and husband Herman of Grundy Center. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1995; a son, Preston, in 2002 and a brother, Ernest.

The Doyen-Abels Funeral Home of Wellsburg was in charge of arrangements.
