Timaru, March 29.
The Rev C. E. Beecroft (Wesleyan) who leaves for Auckland shortly, nearly closed his ministerial term here in a tragic manner yesterday by swallowing a poisonous liniment in mistake for a cough mixture. A cycling visitor had left the liniment in a "cinnamon cure" phial, and to relieve hoarseness, Mr. Beecroft swallowed some of it. He then noticed that it had not the taste as the cinnamon cure, but he did not think much of it. A few hours later he went to bed and became delirious. Medical aid was obtained, Drs. Hogg and Boive being in attendance for some hours. At one time it was feared that Mr. Beecroft would not recover, but he had much improved this morning.
The cyclist had obtained the limiment in a properly labelled phial, but on sharing it with another he put his half in a "cinnamon cure" bottle, and on departure left it behind.• Event: Bush Advocate, 27 Oct 1902. Dannebirke Advocate (published daily)

There was a petition by Charles Ernest Beecroft for a dissolution of his marriage with Alice Beecroft, on the ground of her adultery with Edward Henry Davies.
Mr. Quick appeared for the petitioner. Neither respondent nor co-respondent appeared, nor were they represented.
The evidence of the petitioner, who is a Wesleyan clergyman, showed that he was married to Alice Pedley on the 19th August, 1874, at Congleton, in Chesire. They lived happily together until a man named Davies, who had been living in the house, admitted that he had seduced Mrs. Beecroft. Mrs. Beecroft confessed that she had been guilty of adultery. She went away next day and lived with Davies. he consulted a solicitor about taking proceedings for a divorce, but at the request of his wife he took her back. They then came to New Zealand, and Davies took passage by the same vessel. mr. Beecroft went to minister at Hastings, Davies coming to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Beecroft lived together in the house at Hastings, but they did not cohabit. After some time Mr. Beecroft came down to Wellington with his wife, intending to leave her in the South and give her an allowance, but before he could take the steamer she went to live with Davies, who afterwards wrote stating that he intended to protect her for the future.
The Rev. Joseph Berry having proved that Mrs. Beecroft and Davies were living together.
His Honour granted a decree nisi.• They were divorced Otago Daily Times on 4 Jun 1889. Wellington, June 3.
In the Divorce court this afternoon the following cases were decided: - Stephen Smith v. Mary Ann Smith, petition for divorce on the ground of adultery; a decree of nisi granted. Catherine Brodie v. Oswald Spotteswood Brodie - a wife's petion on the ground of adultery, continued cruelty, and desertion; a decree nisi granted. Re Chas. Ernest Beecroft v. Alice Beecroft -- a husband's petition on the ground of adultery. In this case it was shown that the adultery had taken place in England, but in order to avoid a scandal petitioner brought his wife to New Zealand where they lived under the same roof but never cohabited. The petitioner had charge of the Wesleyan district at Hastings, Hawke's Bay, but after leaving there on the way south, and when in Wellington, his wife left him and ran away to Sydney with a young man engaged as clerk here in the Property Tax department. A decree nisi was granted.
