Coroner Starts Inquiry

Whether Any Blame Attachs to Driver of Machine Will be Brought Out at Investigation
---
Willis Becraft, who was run down Friday night by an automobile driven by Carl Foster, died Sunday morning at six-thirty o'clock. The accident occurred almost in front of the Becraft home on the Fort Wayne road just north of the Catholic cemetery. Becraft suffered a fracture at the base of the skull, a broken ankle and was injured internally.

He was conscious only a short time and Saturday it appeared that he was fatally hurt. He was unconscious all day Saturday and lingered until Sunday morning when he died. Coroner Green was calloed and examined the body, but took no testimony. The examination of witnesses will be conducted this afternoon and tomorrow.

Mr. Becraft was fifty-nine years old and had resided here for several years. He was a native of Kentucky, but had been employed by T. S. Craig for some time. He is survived by his widow and several children. The accident occurred shortly after dark last Friday evening.

Whether any blame will be attached to Foster, the driver of the automobile, is expected to be brought out in the coroner's investigation. The family naturally has some feelings towards Foster and this has not been bettered by his absence. Foster, it was stated today, never once made any inquiry regarding the mans' condition since the night of the accident and the family at this time is quite bitter towards him.

Becraft was crossing the road towards the Craig barn and when he saw the approaching machine either misjudged the distance or became confused. From witnesses it is learned that he hesitated and then started forward. The driver of the machine stated that he attempted to go around him and that Becraft stepped directly in front of the machine. He was struck a terrific blow and was rolled for quite a distance.

The funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning at ten o'clock at the late residence and burial will take place in East Hill cemetery.
