Memorial Day was started by former slaves on May, 1, 1865, in Charleston, S.C., to honor 257 dead Union soldiers who had been buried in a mass grave in an upscale race track converted into a Confederate prison camp. They dug up the bodies and worked for two weeks to give them a proper burial as gratitude for fighting for their freedom. They then held a parade of 10,000 people led by 3,000 Black children, where they marched, sang and celebrated.

Thomas & Ellen had three children: Mary E., Sarah & Willis. He enlisted 24 Oct `61 and was captured 5 June `64 at Big Chanty, GA. Died 8 Oct 1864 of Scorbutus at Charleston, SC. Also borne as J. B. Craft as published in the New York Newspaper.

Hello Cousins: I just found where our ancestor Thomas Becraft is
buried in Charleston SC. He died in the Civil War on Oct 8, 1864 as
a prisoner of war...I found a URL which shows him as Craft, J. B. -
Private, Co. C, 24th Ky Infantry... listed under Additional Union
Soldier Deaths at Charleston, SC As Prisoners of War....I have
written to a Ed Boots who has this web site to correct this and to
see if this is what is listed in Charleston. Thomas Becraft was
buried in what is called Charleston Race Course Cemetery and was
reinterred at the Beaufort National Cemetery, SC If interested in
