• Event: The Free Lance-Star, 7 Mar 1962. Bragg Road Home Gutted by Flames
A one-story brick home on Bragg Road in Spotsylvania County was left a charred ruin after a fire last night.
The home was occupied by Mrs. Susie Johnson Becraft, a supervisor of nurses at Mary Washington Hospital, and her mother.
Fredericksburg firemen who answered the call said Mrs. Becraft told them she was delayed in reporting the 6 p.m. fire because of trouble getting a phone line.
When they arrived, firemen said, flames had already swept through the interior of the home destroying all furnishings inside. Firemen said the blaze apparently started from an oil stove in the basement, but said they have not yet had an opportunity to study the remains of the house.
A thick blanket of snow on the roof of the Becraft home melted and sent a constant stream of water down all sides of the home, prevented flames from spreading to two nearby houses.
