• His obituary was published in The News on 12 Jan 1938. WINFIELD SCOTT PHELPS, 14 Water Street, died this morning. Death was the result of a fall sustained on Christmas day when he slipped on the ice while on his way from his home to a news stand which caused him to fracture his left arm. He was 68 years, 11 months, and four days. He was a son of the late Richard B. and Margaret Carr Phelps, of Carroll county, and had resided in this city almost his entire life.

Surviving are the following children: John Scott Phelps, Hanover, Pa.; Grayston W. Phelps and Harry Thomas Phelps, both of Frederick; two stepsons, William C. Burras, Buckeystown; and Charles C. Burras, Frederick; a step-daughter, Mrs. Charles Duvall, Mt. Airy; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Emma Phelps, Baltimore; and Mrs. William Oden, Frederick; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. H. Nettie Phelps, of Sykesville.

He was a member of Calvary Methodist Episcopal church and the Leaders Bible Class, also of the Independent Hose Company No. 1. Mr. Phelps was a well-known citizen, having been a dyer at the Union Manufacturing Co. for the past 29 years.

Funeral services for Winfield Scott Phelps, who died early Wednesday morning as the result of an accident, will be held at the funeral home, 8 East Patrick street, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and will be in charge of Dr. R. W. Meeks, pastor at Calvery Methodist church. Friends may call at the funeral home to view the remains any time until hour of the funeral. Burial will be made in Mt. Olivet cemetery. C. E. Cline and Son, funeral directors.

Mrs. Mary Catherine Phelps, wife of Winfield Phelps, died at her home, 166 Baltimore and Ohio avenue, Wednesday evening at 6:45 o'clock of paralysis aged 74 years, one month and 29 days. Besides her husband, she is survived by the following children: John Scott, Grayson W. and Harry T. Phelps, all of this city, also two sons and one daughter by a former marriage, William E. Burriss, near Lime Kiln; Charles C. Burriss, this city, and Mrs. Mamie E. Duvall, Mt. Airy. Three brothers and one sister also survive: Charles A Becraft, Washington; George C. Becraft, Norfolk, VA; Benjamin F. Becraft, Montgomery county and Mrs. C. E. Wilson, who resided with the deceased; also 23 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
