William Henry Wheatley, 84, of Newport-Gray Road, died at home on Sunday, July 3, 2011 with his loving family by his side.

He was born on February 13, 1927 in Brooklyn, the son of the late William Marshall and Gladys (Gilhaus) Wheatley. He attended Newtown Vocational High School on Long Island. Bill moved to this area in 1948 when his family purchased the VanVechten/Primeau farm in the Town of Norway. He left the occupation of farming in 1969 and held various jobs including Remington Arms, St. Elizabeth Hospital and retired from the Town of Norway Highway Department in 1985. Bill was an avid collector of firearms and enjoyed gunsmithing especially in his retirement.

He married Helen Diana Becraft on November 22, 1958 in Newport. Besides his wife, he leaves one son, William Wheatley and his wife, Doreen of Norway; two daughters, Lisa Wheatley of Herkimer and Jim Sullivan and Ann Quinn and her husband, Neil of Norway; two sons-in-law, Richard Haubert of Newport and Joseph Tomaino of Schuyler; and six grandchildren, Nicole Tomaino, Colleen and Matthew Haubert, Lindsey Wheatley, Caroline Roberts and William Wheatley. He was predeceased by his parents in 1960 and by his daughter, Nancy Wheatley-Haubert in 2000.

Friends and relatives are invited to call at the home of the family on Newport-Gray Road in Norway on Thursday, July 7th from 5 to 8 p.m.

• Her obituary was published. Helen Diana Wheatley, 89, formerly of Newport-Gray Road, died peacefully on February 6, 2023 at the Masonic Care Community, Utica with her loving family by her side.

Mrs. Wheatley was born on March 20, 1933 in Gray, a daughter of the late John and Allie (Sperl) Becraft. She graduated from Poland Central School in 1951 and furthered her education at Utica School of Commerce. On November 22, 1958, Helen was united in marriage with William H. Wheatley in Newport. The couple owned and operated the VanVechten / Primeau farm in the Town of Norway for many years. Helen was once active in the Gray Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, and was a member of the "Gray Circle". She was last employed as the Norway Town Clerk and Historian, where she retired after 20 years. Bill preceded her in death on July 3, 2011.

Helen enjoyed her role as Town Historian. She helped many people with genealogy research and her leadership helped the town acquire the former Norway Baptist Church after its closing. Mrs. Wheatley was instrumental in establishing the Norway Historical Society and served on the board for many years. The church is now a history center and museum on the NYS Registry of Historic Churches.

Survivors include one son, William (Doreen) Wheatley of Norway; two daughters, Lisa (Jim Sullivan) Wheatley of Madison, AL, and Ann (Neil) Quinn of Norway; two sons-in-law, Joe Tomaino and Richard Haubert; six grandchildren, Nicole (Joel) Holk, Colleen and Matthew Haubert, Lindsey Wheatley, Caroline (Ben) Roberts and William Wheatley; three great-grandchildren, Landon and Rocco Holk, and Mae Roberts; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband William, Helen was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Wheatley-Haubert; three sisters, Mae Becraft, Elsie Worden and Florence Lodge; and by one brother, John Becraft.

In accordance with Helen's wishes there will be no public services.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Forestport household at the Masonic Home for their compassionate care.
