TROY - Grant Becraft, 85, formerly of Pinewoods Avenue, widower of Mary C. Evans Becraft, died yesterday at Samaritan Hospital after a brief illness.
Born and educated in Utica, he was the son of the late George and Adeline Hughes Becraft.
Mr. Becraft had resided in Troy for the past 52 years. He had been a salesman for Inland Steel Company for many years, retiring 18 years ago. Previousl, he had been a salesman for Beech-Nut Packing in Canajoharie for many years.
Mr. Becraft was a volunteer for the annual United Way Campaign in Reneselaer County for several years and was a former member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Lansingburgh. He was a member of Liberty Masonic Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons in Utica, St. David's Society of the Capital District and the Wynastskill Senior Citizens. He was a member and deacon of the Mt. Ida Community Baptist Church in Troy.
Survivors include three daughters, Jill M. Cavell of St. Simons Island Ga., Judy M. Saples-Dorton of Columbia, MD. and Jane E Cox of Troy, a sister, Pearl Ackoyd of New Port Ritchey, Fla; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be private at the convenience of the family with Rev. Barbara Lacker-Ware, pastor of the Mt Ida Community Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be at Crown Hill Memorial Park in Clinton.
Calling hours are from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc., 278 Pawling Ave., Troy.

TROY - Mary C. Becraft, 83, of Pinewoods Avenue, retired Russell Sage College executive secretary and wife of Grant Becraft, died Tuesday at Samaritan Hospital after a long illness.
Born and educated in Utica, she was daughter of the late Richard and Laura Gabriel Evans. She had resided in Troy for the last 50 years.
Mrs. Becraft had served as executive secretary for two former presidents of Russell Sage College: Dr. Lewis A. Froman, whom she served for 19 years, and Dr. Charles Walker, two years. Mrs. Becraft retired in 1972.
She was a member of the Ilium Literary Club, St. David's Society of the Capital District and Wynantskill Senior Citizens.
Mrs. Becraft was an active member of Mt. Ida Community Baptist Church in Troy and its Women's Guild and was a former deaconess.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three daughters, Jill M. Covell of St. Simons Island, Ga., Judy M. Staples-Dorton of Columbia, Md., and Jan S. Cox of Troy; two sisters, Jane E. Tibbits of Whitesboro and Irene Ecret of Louisville, Ky.; a brother, Henry G. Evans of New York Mills; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be private at the convenience of the family from the Bryce Funeral Home, 276 Pawling Ave. in Troy. Interment will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park in Clinton.
Calling hours are from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
