• Event: Bath County News-Outlook, 11 Feb 2009. Barron indicted for murder
by Charles Mattox, News Reporter

A Bath County Grand Jury returned a superseding murder indictment on Jan 23 against Eleazer Barron, also know as Rodney Barron, 48 of Bath county.

The indictment states that Barron committed murder on Dec 31, 2003 when he, with the intent to cause the death of another person under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to human life and wantonly engaged in conduct which created a grave risk of death to another and caused the death of another when he shot Jerry Becraft with a handgun.

Kentucky State Trooper Joe Veeneman contines to lead the complex investigation which has made its way through the circuit court in one form or another several times with no clear-cut resolution.

Roger "Plum" Leach was also involved in the circumstances which led to Becraft's murder, according to investigators.

Leach pled guilty to tampering with physical evidence, according to investigators, and the six-day murder trial of Barron is current scheduled to begin this March 23.

"Mr. Becraft was shot five times in 2003 at his residence at Blevins Valley Road," Veeneman told The News Outlook. "The murder weapon has been recovered and we have good ballistics."

Veeneman praised the efforts of fellow KSP officers Jim Bowling and Jeremy Hamm who arrived on the scene rapidly after shots were fired that took the life of Becraft.

"There's no question in my mind that Mr. Barron is the one who pulled the trigger and murdered Mr. Becraft," Veeneman said.

If convicted of murder, Barron faces 20-50 years to life imprisonment.

Commonwealth's Attorny Keen Johnson declined comment on the indictment and pending trial.
