September 1882

Sept 2 - My wife and myself got a pass to Juab from Salt Lake on railway. Arriving at Juan, Bro. Henry Chestnut was in waiting. At Nephi, my wife, Maria, came to see us. Rode in wagon to Scipio at rate of five miles per hour. My wife Sarah very sick. Sister Poulson came to help. My wife appeared to not to desire much of the liquids that had up to today sustained her, except for a drink of water and again relapse into a stupor. Sisters Bennett and Dorothy Staffeson came and took the trouble to get my sick wife up and washed and changed her under things, she remarked that she was ready to die or live. I went to sleep and awakened by her talk. She said, "I am going, I am going." I asked if she had any wish, she promptly said yes. She was not afraid to die but willing to wait if it was the Lord's will. She fell into a stupor. Elizabeth Beecroft was with her and I went to back yard. In 3 minutes I was back and noticed a stillness and paleness about the thin face and could hear not breathing. I felt her right hand hanging off the bedside then felt her forehead and chin. It was finished, the weary was at rest forever. (It was 2 a.m. Sept 3, 1882 when Sarah passed away.) Oh, how I felt at the moment, but while I wept at my loss, I rejoiced at her gain and deliverance from pain. She had fought the good fight and had kept the faith. The two sisters were sent for who performed the office of putting on her robe and other things - which Mary found each article enclosed all in a bundle. She had all things ready. From the day she was baptized 4 Oct 1843 in Bradford, Yorkshire, England by Elder Robert Parker to this day of her death. She has never faltered in Mormonism but kept on her steady course till her death. Bro. Charrington was employed to make coffin. Many of our neighbors old and young, came to see the cops which looked as natural as life. At close of day a few girls came to watch, among them my granddaughter Sarah. About 9 the coffin was brought and Henry Chestnut and Counselor Tanner got the body into it and we moved to the school room. counselor Tanner called meeting to order, a hymn sun "Farewell All Earthly Honor." Prayer Bro. Charringtron - remarks High Priest Charles Rawlingson. Another song and prayer. Lid of coffin opened for one last look. the coffin put in a spring wagon and Bro. Benjamin Bennett drove the team, while I followed in wagon of Henry Chestnut. Remains deposited in grave, covered with wood to keep dirt or earth from touching coffin. After dead was covered suitable prayer was offered by Elder Charles Wood Sen. in which he prayed the body, coffin and grave might not be disturbed til day of resurrection. The cortage returned in order. I had dinner with Henry Chestnut, thence home where I commenced to write a letter to John at Manassa but did not finish it til later. Also wrote to my daughters, Elizabeth in Salt Lake and Mary Ann, in Farmington and mailed them. Went to settle for coffin $4.00. Went to settle with Bro. Thomas Davis for digging the grave but he
was away herding sheep. Wrote my wife Maria. Mary on hand to make my meals.
