• Event, from Joseph's journal, 14 Nov 1873
Wed Nov 14 1873 - James Toms brought a telegram saying Christopher Beecroft killed himself last night by cutting his throat in a state of insanity. Signed John Beecroft. This was fearful news for a father. My father in Heaven hear the prayers of me thy unworthy servant and enable my wife and my son's wife to bear up under the weight of trouble thus brought upon them. Grant me thy Holy Spirit and may I nevermore grieve it. Learned I could have a conveyance to Holden. I and my daughter Mary Ann went to endowment house and was proxy for the sealing of my grandfather Christopher Beecroft and my grandmother Alice Tempest; Thomas Beecroft to Hannah Leach; my Aunt Elizabeth Beecroft to Uncle Samuel Craven. Went to town, bought a fiddle box and 2 strings for $3.50, bought a brace and bit for one dollar 75¢. I took train to Provo and stage to Peoche. Wrapped myself in two blankets and kept tolerably warm. At Scipio had breakfast. Reached Holden about one o'clock in afternoon. I found my wife and happy to see her face after an absence of one year.
(Quote) "The so-called suicide as reported on page 18 later developed to have been a murder. The man participating in the murder confessed his part in it to member of his family, namely Mary E. B. Gibbons and Sarah B. Killy Salmon. Deceased well known, sober, steady and inoffensive. Leaves wife - three children."
• Obituary, Salt Lake Herald, 20 Nov 1873
Yesterday (Nov. 19) Mr. Joseph Beecroft, lately a compositor in the Herald office, received a telegraphic message that his son, Christopher Beecroft, of Cedar Springs, Millard County, had committed suicide by cutting his throat with a butcher knife, in a fit of insanity. Mr. Beecroft, who is an amiable old gentleman, has our keenest sympathy in this trying breavement.
