... He went into merchandising with William C. Beecroft.

He entered that partnership on February 1, 1914, joining him in the New and Secondhand Furniture business in the familiar store at 1110 - G Avenue. Shortly after this, on April 3, 1914, he formed another partnership, this one with his mother-in-law, Laura Ann Mecham, in owning two pieces of property on 8th Street. One was the Watts Hotel, No 516, and the other "the Bowers Property", at No 522.

...
Joseph was not able to go to Taylor for the funeral. He was detained in Douglas because of the illness of his partner, William C. Beecroft. He had been ill for a number of months, so sick that he had been unable to come into the store, leaving its operation entirely in Joseph's hands. Finally, on April 15, 1935, he and Joseph talked the matter over and decided that it would be best for them to dissolve their partnership. In doing so, Beecroft asked that his share be sold to his son-in-law, C. W. Harrell, who would come into the concern as a full partner.

Thus, after twenty-five years of doing business together, Joseph and William C. Beecroft had ended their association in the "New and Second Hand Furniture" store at 1110 G Avenue. Their parting must have been a sad affair, for they had been more than business partners. Through all of these years they had been close friends and fellow members of the Douglas Branch. While Joseph had been president, William Beecroft had been a counselor; thus, they had had many opportunities to learn to know and respect each other as they worked together in this sweet, spiritual responsibility.
