Stephen R. Becraft

Stephen Roe Becraft, born on Sept. 3, 1910, in Brushy Holler, Menifee County, Ky., went to meet his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Elizabeth Becraft; brothers Robert Estil, Clarence Evan and Espy Becraft. His wife, Mildred M. (Tipton) Becraft died on April 26, 2000, just 98 days before their 65th wedding anniversary.

He is survived by a brother, Jesse James “Jack” Becraft of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Edna Lee (Ray) Mann and Mary Bessie Alfrey, both of Middletown; two sons, Daniel R. of Middletown and Stephen J. (Sandra) of Upland, Calif.; four grandchildren, Danine (Bill) Bothe of Concord, Calif., Shawn R. of Springboro, Ohio, Felicia Brown of Upland, Calif., and David S. of Denver, Colo.; with two great-grandchildren, Trustin Brown of Upland and Stephanie Crandall of Concord. He had five nephews and three nieces.

Before moving to Tucson, Ariz., in November, 1943, he worked at various companies in the Middletown area including Armco, Inland Container, Gardner-Richardson and P. Lorillard (Polar Bear) Tobacco Co.

In Tucson, he worked as a frame mechanic on B-24 and B-36 bombers, at Arizona Glass, and retired as the warehouse superintendent for Tucson Warehouse and Transfer in September 1975.

Mr. Becraft returned to Middletown in December 1979, where he pursued an active life and was always willing to help others. He was a member of Stratford Heights Church of God. He was very proud to be a Kentucky Colonel, and he was an avid hunter and an excellent marksman.

A special “Thank You” to Dr. Page, and all the staff at Heartland of Oak Ridge in Miamisburg where he was a resident since May 1998. Also, a Thank You to the Hospice staff who cared for him during his last days.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation will be Saturday, Jan. 17, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Baker-Stevens Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Elk Creek Cemetery.
