Bob was born March 19, 1916, to Benjamin Ralph and Ida May Collins Hutchinson in Randalia, Iowa. He grew up in Minnesota and South Dakota, graduated high school at Coleman, South Dakota, in 1935 and attended Dakota Wesleyan University. Bob graduated Dunwoodie Institute in 1940 and became a certified engineer. During World War II he used his plant in Minneapolis to design and manufacture many useful products for the military. He donated his patents to the war effort. Most of his manufacturing involved metals and plastics, such as steel bridging, automotive body parts, steel fence posts, and Bailey bridges. He manufactured the first ballpoint pens on the market.
Mr. Hutchinson retired from manufacturing in 1970 and devoted much of his time and talent to his church. In 1980 he moved to Galveston and became very active at Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church. Many people benefited from his efforts in the Pioneer Club, the Men's Fellowship, Seaside Festival's homemade pumpkin pies, and many mission efforts, including feeding the street people in Galveston and building a church in Mexico. He was a lay speaker in the United Methodist Church and served on numerous committees, including Libbie's Place. At home he helped rear five grandchildren. Bob was a member of Elks Lodge 126 for 31 years and was chaplain for 18 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, a baby sister, a step-daughter, and a granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife Kitty, two brothers (Warren and Earl), one sister (Thelma Oren), two children (Robert, Jr. and Suzi Palackas), a step-daughter (Susan Hughes), 13 grandchildren (Matthew Dillard, Mark Dillard, Emily Dillard, Richard Palackas, Kristin Burden, Stephanie Holtz, Robert Hutchinson Ill, Rev.
