Horace Milton Owen | 1928 - 2018 | Obituary

November 22, 1928 - June 19, 2018

Horace Milton ("Doc") Owen, longtime resident of Heber, Arizona, suffered a stroke on Father's Day, June 17th, and passed away peacefully in his home on June 19, 2018. Doc is now reunited with Lynnette, his wife of 28 years, who was, no doubt, anxiously awaiting his arrival.

Doc was born in Gladstone, NM on November 22, 1928 to Fletch and Lizzie Owen. He spent his early years in Pueblo and Canyon City, Colorado.

Dear to his heart was his brother, Rayburn ("Bud"), his sisters, Barbara, Lois, and Joyce; his nephews Tom Owen (of Glendale), Allen Owen (of Camp Verde), and Jim Owen (of Houston, Texas), in addition to 4 nieces and 7 additional nephews.

Father's Day was an appropriate day for Doc to respond to the call from his eternal home, as he was first and foremost a family man. He lived for his more than 100 inherited descendants and family members. Doc is survived by His sister, Barbara, 10 nephews, 4 nieces, 5 children, Rikki (Michael) Strohmeyer, Gary (Debbie) Crandell, Jody (Timaree) Crandell, Lori Crandell, and Dana (Tom) Bradford; 26 grandchildren, and 76 great-grandchildren, (and counting).

Doc and Lynette spent most of their 28 years together in Heber and were a fixture of the community. The name "Doc" is synonymous with generosity. It would be difficult to find anyone who knew him that had not benefited from his kind and giving spirit. He enjoyed social gatherings, particularly family reunions, and days by the lake camping and fishing.

Ever the salesman and entrepreneur, Doc had a career with El Paso Natural Gas and operated and managed many of his own businesses, including the Heber Country Store.

Being a man who preferred informality, Doc requested to have a simple graveside service. His family planned to celebrate his 90th birthday on Thanksgiving Day with a party and reunion, but will now gather to lay him to rest at the Heber Cemetery on Friday, July 6th at 10:00 a.m.

Muriel (Lynette) Owen died peacefully Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013 at her senior living residence in Show Low with her husband, Horace (Doc) Owen, at her side. She lost a brave, three-year struggle with declining health.

Lynette was born Nov. 2, 1934, in Garcia, Chihuahua, Mexico, to Pauline Turley and Albert Farnsworth Beecroft, and moved to the United States in 1948. Four years later, she married J. Duane (Chink) Crandell, and settled in Heber, which has been her home for over 60 years.

Lynette loved to quilt and crochet. She created countless heirlooms for her children, grandchildren, and for charity. Everyone who knew her can attest to her hospitality and cooking skills, and fond memories of gathering around her kitchen table to a feast of great Mexican food.

Lynette was most beloved for her ornery sense of humor and her warm and generous spirit. She championed the underdog and took under her wing those whom others might overlook. She was fiercely loyal to her family and especially cherished her close relationship with her brothers and sisters.

It was a big year for Lynette and her family in 1984. After losing her husband, Duane, four years earlier, she married Horace (Doc) Owen, the man she called "the perfect husband." Doc was the light of her life and has been her most beloved companion for 29 years.

Lynette is survived by her husband, Doc, three brothers: Jack Beecroft of Linden, Glen Beecroft of Taylor, William (Bill) Beecroft of Heber. Also surviving her are her five children: Rikki Strohmeyer of Prescott, Gary Crandell of Heber, Jody Crandell of Spanish Fork, Utah,Lori Mahan of Sedona, and Dana Crandell Bradford of Pinetop; as well as 24 grandchildren and 50 great grandchildren. She was fiercely proud of her family. She was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.

Those who knew Lynette are aware of her private nature. At her request, there will be a graveside-only service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, followed by a luncheon for family and loved ones at the LDS Church.

Silver Creek Mortuary of Taylor handled the arrangements.
