Morris Bryan Beecroft
Morris B. Beecroft was a son of William H. (1846-1940) and Margaret A. (1857-1910) Beecroft, born December 11, 1891 in Schaghticoke. William was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Beecroft. They emigrated from England before 1850. Thomas was a wheelwright and wagon maker, and William followed his father into that business. He had a wagon maker's shop on Main Street in the village of Schaghticoke.
The 1900 US census was the first which included Morris. The family consisted of William, 54 and Margaret, 43, plus Thomas, 18, a wool weaver; Charles A., 15, a laborer in the woolen mill; George F., 13; and future soldier Morris B., 8. The example of Charles working at age 15 suggests that the Beecrofts expected their children to finish a primary education and go to work. Morris became the exception. In the 1910 U.S. census, just George, now 23 and a laborer in a cemetery, and Morris, 18, with no occupation, lived with their parents. Mother Margaret died later that year of peritonitis. Morris was actually a student. In the Albany City Directory for that year, Morris Beecroft was living on Madison Avenue, listed as such.
Morris Beecroft graduated from Albany Medical College in 1913 and was appointed to a position at St. Peter's Hospital, according to the "Journal of the Alumni Association of the Albany Medical College." "The Annual Catalogue of Union University "(Union College in Schenectady) reported that Morris B. Beecroft was an instructor in Pathology in 1915-1916. The following year he and a co-author named B.T. Terry published the results of a case they had of a woman with anthrax in the "Proceedings of the NY Pathological Society". Morris had moved on to New York City and Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn.
Of course at the same time, the U.S. was entering the world war. According to his New York Veteran Data Card, Morris enlisted in New York City on May 15, 1917. Of course, Morris served in the Army as a doctor, a Captain in the Medical Corps. At first he was at the Rockefeller Institute in New York City, then at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana with the 39th Division by November. He sailed for England from New York on May 18, 1918, and served at Base Hospital 37 in Kent until January 1919. Most of his patients came from the 27th and 30th Divisions, who had been fighting to break the Hindenburg Line. The 27th Division included a few boys from Schaghticoke and many from New York City. Morris' next assignment was at Camp Hospital 65 in France with the 78th Division. Then in March he was on to Evacuation Hospital 10. In May 1919 he became an instructor at the A.E.F. University, a program designed to both educate the troops and keep them busy until they could be transported home. On June 30 he sailed back to the U.S. on the "S.S. Leviathan" and was discharged on July 10, 1919 at Camp Dix in New Jersey.
I don't know where Morris was just after the war. The first I can find him is when he married Rosalind Muir on February 8, 1926 in Norfolk, Virginia. She was 20, he was 35. The couple were listed in the 1930 US census in Newport News, Virginia. They stayed in that area, though I can't find them in the 1940 US census. Morris appears in the Newport News City Directories through the years, living on 64th Street. He registered for the draft for World War II, at age 50. He was 5'8 ½" tall, 175 pounds, with gray eyes, black hair and a sallow complexion.

Morris, Sr. died of an aneurysm on February 26, 1963 and is buried in Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News. Rosalind survived until December 4, 1993.

WHO's WHO?

HELEN MUIR BURROUGHS
It was indeed my pleasure to visit with this gracious
lady in her lovely home at Warwick Forest.
Helen, one of 6 children, was born to Mary
Blanche and O.F. Muir in Belhaven, North
Carolina, located on the beautiful Pungo River.
Helen's grandmother, Lucy Selby Jarvis
founded the Methodist Church in Belhaven
which Helen attended until she left to make her
home in Newport News. Her grandfather, T.R.
Jarvis fought in the Civil War.
Before leaving Belhaven, Helen organized the
town's first Public Library and worked there for
two years. She also worked in several libraries
in Laurinburg, North Carolina and enjoyed
working as a Teacher's Aide. Helen came to
Newport News and enrolled in Business
College. Her first job after graduating found her
working as a secretary in the Medical Lab at the
old Buxton hospital for Dr. M.B. Beecroft, her
brother-in-law. Some of you will recognize the
Beecroft name - her nephew, Moss Beecroft
owned Beecroft and Bull Clothiers and in his
younger days was an outstanding amateur
golfer at the local, state, and national levels;
having won 6 State Amateur Championships
and other awards.
Helen met her husband, Jack Riggin Burroughs
in Newport News, and they were married in
1944. Jack was a Lt. Commander in the U.S.
Navy in World War II and served aboard the
Battleship USS Indiana, built in Newport News.
He was an educator having been a teacher,
coach, and principal during his career. Jack
died in 1995, but prior to his passing he was
inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at his
Alma Mater, Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell, SD.
Helen and Jack were blessed with 2 wonderful
children. Mary Rosalind Whitley is a graduate
of JMU and now works for the Virginia State
Department of Education. Her son Jack
graduated from VMI and recently retired from
a 30 year career at Dupont. From these unions
were born 4 grandchildren; three girls,
Amanda, Laurin and Meredith, and for you
football fans, her grandson Justin had a brief
career with the New Orleans Saints.
Helen joined Yorkminster in April 2002. She
just loves the church and everyone who works
so hard to make it such a pleasant experience.
She rides the church bus on Sunday morning
and would love to see if full. She enjoys playing
bridge, reading, attending Circle #3 and being a
part of the Golden Saints.
When you attend church on Sunday, look for
this tall, stately lady wearing one of her
beautiful hats and extend the hand of
Christian love.
