He was born April 12, 1929 in Baltimore, MD to the late Newell DeWitt Alcorn, Sr. and Carrie Dean Pickett. He was a resident of Laurel for 68 years. In 1997, Newell and his wife Delores began to move up and down the east coast until they settled in New Bern, N.C.
He graduated from Laurel High School in 1946 and was a member of the American Legion Post #60 and Moose Lodge in Laurel, MD, VFW in South Carolina and the Elks Lodge in Maryland and Delaware. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War from 1950-1954. Newell worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Laurel and Burtonsville for 13 years and retired from the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years Dolores Alcorn and his children Lee Anne, Kenny and Lynn. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at DONALDSON FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL, 313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, MD 20707 where services will be held on Wednesday at 11am. Interment will follow at Ivy Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060 OR Elks Lodge #2283, 8261 Brock Bridge Road, Laurel, MD 20724-1412.

Mrs. Alcorn is preceded in death by her husband Newell Alcorn, and a brother Warren Becraft. Dolores worked at JHU/APL for over 40 years, retiring in 1997. After her retirement she enjoyed spending time with her husband shopping, boating, and playing golf. Charitable contributions may be made in Dolores' memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's MD Chapter.
