ROSEBURG, Or., March 28. -- (Special.)-- According to Marshal Smith of Sutherlin, who was in Roseburg today, a grand jury investigation will be requested into the conduct of Roy Tipton and James Beecroft, both of Winchester, charged with operating automobiles under fictitious license tags. The young men recently figured as the leading characters in a criminal case in Roseburg. It is alleged that Tipton last night threatened the life of the Sutherlin officer and also endeavored to run him down with an automobile.

While questioning Beecroft concerning a license tag, Tipton drove up, his car bearing the same license number as that driven by Beecroft. Ordered to stop, Tipton put on all speed and attempted to get away and, although the officer fired at him three times, kept on going. Jumping into an automobile, Smith followed and a chase lasting several miles followed. It only ended when the marshal lost sight of his man in the darkness.
