Three miles further north Beacroft and party have several blocks on the left bank of the Mole River. They have had assays ranging from 50 oz. to 300oz., and are bagging a considerable quantity with the intention of forwarding it for treatment.

• Event: The Queenslander, 5 Dec 1885. Glen Innes, November 24. -- Some rich specimens of silver ore from Rie's Creek have been forwarded to Sydney for assay by Mr. J. H. Beacroft, Mason's Lead, on which is a shaft 35ft. with a lode of about 10ft. wide. Mr. Beacroft will forward 12 tons to Melbourne, to be treated in Messrs. Lamont and Kahlo's works. Assays ranging from 87 oz. to 248 oz. per ton have been obtained. Keeting and party, on the same lode north of Mason's have at a depth of 8ft. had an assay yielding 63oz. Pearman and party on the south have had an assay of 46oz. and the load looks well for permanency. Messrs. Beacroft have sunk 26ft. and are now driving through the lode. They have obtained an assay of 280oz. On the land known as The Caves four lodes have been discovered, but they are only open a few feet as yet. One lode has a surface show of from 30ft. to 40ft. The Homeward Bound obtained rich ore from their lode.

February 27.
There is not much to report in regard to alluvial mining. The recent rise in tin has caused some poor ground to be worked in the neighbourhood of the town, ground which at former prices was not payable, but this has not resulted in any increase in the output worth mentioning. In lodes, however, I have to report a commencement of what may prove a valuable industry. Two different parties have taken up leases in two entirely different localities under the Mineral Regulations for Silver, and are quite confident in each case that they have got a really good thing. The first lease, forty acres in extent, was taken up about three weeks ago by Mr. J.H. Beacroft, a gentleman who is largely interested in the Pye's Creek silver claims. He traced the argentiferous formation across the border, and has taken up his property in this colony in some very rough country. I am informed, by one of his partners, in the venture, that his men are now on the ground, and that he commenced operations this day. Mr. Beacroft is himself an assayer, and is thoroughly satisfied with the surface indications. There is, therefore, every reason to hope that his enterprise will be rewarded. The claim is somewhere on the Balladean run. I have not been able to get out there yet, but hope to do so before long. ...

Silver leases have also been taken up in the neighbourhood in four entirely distinct localities. First on Balladean run Mr. J. H. Beacroft, who has considerable interest in different claims on the Pye's Creek silverfield, in New South Wales, has taken up a mineral lease for silver, and Mr. J. Fletcher, the proprietor of the station, has taken up two leases. Work has been commenced, and I am informed that so far the development of the lodes is considered satisfactory. It is, however, too early in the day to form any definite opinion of the value of the properties. Mr. Beacroft was the discoverer of the locality, having traced the argentiferous formation over the border from Pye's Creek. Then Mr. Beacroft and Mr. Maggs, manager of Nundubbermero station, and some others have taken up silver land at the Gebbinbar Mountain, on the Pike's Creek watershed. Work has been commenced here also. To these localities must be added Boonoo Boonoo, over the border, and Undercliff run, near Wilson's Downfall, also on the other side of the border. The latter is the most important of the New South Wales discoveries, from a Stanthorpe point of view, as we own the station for Undercliff, whereas Boonoo Boonoo, if it ever becomes an important centre, will communicate through Wallangarra. At present the road is somewhat rough, but I am informed that a very fair road could be made at a moderate cost.

Influenza is very prevalent throughout the district. The Mayor (Mr. J. H. Beacroft) is seriously ill with this complaint.

• Event: The Sydney Morning Herald, 7 Oct 1895. At St. Marys the Minister and party were entertained by the Mayor (Alderman J.H. Beacroft) at a dinner which (given at Cotta's hotel) in regard to the way in which it was prepared and served left nothing to be desired. Fortunately, the time at the disposal of the visitors being short contemplated speechmaking had necessarily to be abandoned. The welcome extended to the Minister was, however, none the less cordial than if the original programme had been adhered to.

J.H. Beacroft, the local auctioneer, reports:-At his fortnightly sale, March 28, 500 head yarded. Prices much improved since the lat runs. Springers, £5 5s to £7 per head; fat cows (local), £4 15s to £7 ; stove bullocks, £4 12s to £5 1s; store cows, £3 to £3 15s; steers, 2 year olds, to £2 15s; 2 to 3 year old heifers, £3 to £4 5s; poddies, heifers, and steers, £1 10s to £2 5s, according to size and quality.

St. Marys was enfete yesterday, the occasion being the laying of the memorial stone of a new Mechanics' Institute. Mr. J. H. Beacroft (Mayor of St. Marys) acted as chairman and the speakers were Messrs. J. Cook, M.P., S. E. Lees, M.L.A., T. R. Smith, J.P., the Rev. Dixon Hudson, and Mr. V. A. Jones (president of the institution). Mr. S.E. Lees, who was presented with a silver trowel beautifully engraved, and a liguum vitae mallet, laid the stone. Sergeant H. Gate presented a Union Jack, one of th first raised at Bloemfontein on its occupancy by the British. The late E. H. Ramsley, who was a comrade of Gates's, made an appeal to Gates when they parted to secure a Union Jack for the St. Marys Mechanics' Institute, of which he (Ramsley) was one of the oldest members and ex-secretary. Shortly afterwards Ramsley died of enteric fever, and Gates, who was orderly to Captain Pearce, secured the flag, and Captain Pearce brought it home. The collection realized £15, Over £150 had been previously collected. A concert was held the same evening.

DEATH OF MR. J. H. BEACROFT.

ST. MARYS, Wednesday.
The Mayor Alderman J.H. Beacroft, J.P., 41, died at 3 a.m. to-day. Deceased took ill on Monday with influenza, when he became unconscious and partly paralyzed. Mr. Beacroft was Mayor on three occasions, churchwarden of St. Mary Magdalene, and Synod representative. He was at one time a teacher in the Educational Department, and had considerable interest in mining. He started as a live stock auctioneer here about a year ago. Deceased leaves a widow and one child. The funeral will take place to-morrow.

James Beacroft, Mayor of St. Mary's, a man well known in the district, is dead. His illness was brief; the cause of death was influenza and inflammation of the brain.

FUNERAL OF MR. J. H. BEACROFT

ST. MARYS, Thursday.
The funeral of the late Mr. J. H. Beacroft, Mayor of St. Marys, took place this afternoon, the remains being interred in the Church of England Cemetery. The procession was one of the largest ever seen in St. Marys. The Druids, of which the deceased was a member, marched in front of the hearse in full regalia. The aldermen of St. Marys marched beside the hearse. The church was draped in black, and the Deed March in "Soul" was played. The Rev. Dixon-Hudson, rector of St. Marys, and the Rev. A. C. Corlette, rector of Kogarah, officiated at the service in the church. The Rev. A. C. Corelette delivered a touching address at the grave. The Druids' burial service was read by Mr. R. Guthrie. Many beautful wreaths were sent, including those from St. Marys and the Penrith Municipal Councils.

Lloyd appointed official assignee.
