Events

• Immigrated: from Chettenham, England. James and his first wife Caroline came to America from England on the ship "Olympus". It sailed from England with 245 saints and 60 other passengers, leaving port on March 4, 1851. Elder William Howell presided over the Mormons. It was a perilous voyage, such that the Captain told the second mate to tell the Captain of the Mormons that they should pray for the ship. Elder Howell told the second mate that they had embarked from Liverpool to New Orleans
and they would arrive safely in that port and "Our God will protect us." The Saints prayed and the next
day asked permission to hold religious services. During this crossing fifty persons were baptized. With
them was McGaw Company member George T. Woodhead, William Bailey & Phillip Smith. They
arrived in New Orleans April 27, 1851.

• He worked as a carver and polisher.

• Event: 13 Dec 1871. In December 13, 1871, James Toms and three other men
were arrested for the murder of Dr. J. King Robinson in 1866.364 On April 30, 1872, "Hosea Stout, Wm.
H. Kimball, Brigham Y. Hampton, John L. Blythe, Alexander Butt, and James Thoms were released by
the Third District Court, on the strength of the Supreme Court decision, at Washington, D.C., John
Brazier had previously been released."
