At 18 joined 3rd NJ Foot Militia, Co C on 4/23/1861 in Trenton NJ. At age 20 for 3 month enlistment; and was discharged on 7/31/1861. He rejoined the service in the 1st regiment, Co B NJ calvalry as a corporal 8/1/186, but was demoted to private on 3/18/1862. He transferred to Co D where he was promoted to corporal on 6/1/1865. He mustered out with the rest of the unit on 7/24/1865. The unit fought a Harper's Ferry, Gettysberg and was at Appomatox.
He was 5' 8 1/2 inches tall, with a light complexion, blue eyes and blond hair; discharged July 24, 1865. Was single when enlisted- married 26 Apr 1864 in Trenton. Sent money to Christiana Beacroft until 1864, when he sent money to Mary Beacroft in Trenton NJ. In 1900 was a boarder at 318 Hewitt in Trenton - where Barbara widow of Wilhelm was living with her brother. In 1898 was living there as well Invalid pension (initally $4 per month) commencing 7/25/1865, increased to $6 p.m. in 1881, reduced to $2 p.m. in 1883, increased to $4 pm in 1886 , $8 pm in 1897, $12 pm in 1901, $15pm in 1910, $25 in 1912- cert no. 178727 due to impact of broken femur which occured while riding his horse during a drill inSeptember 1861 at Camp Kalorama, near Washington DC.• He worked as a Spinner, Dyer before the Civil War.

Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, under direction of Poulson & Coleman.• Her obituary was published in the Trenton Evening Times on 26 Jun 1918.
