• Event: Kirkstall Forge, 1800. To look through the Forge's records is to see a picture of this country's industrial history. Here is a typical eighteenth century advertisement of a moulder:

A single man who is a perfect Master of the Moulding Business will meet with great encouragement by applying to Messrs Butler and Beecroft of Kirkstall Forge, near Leeds. A drunkard or lazy-bones need not apply.

The forge and the Butler family were naturally involved in the wars and uprisings of those days. Thomas Butler wrote at the time of the Napoleonic wars: "We frequently mention the respectability of our house and the extensiveness of our concerns, yet what have we done for the poorest tradesmen in the neighbourhood to support the common cause?" The result of this statement was the support the Kirkstall Forge gave for a Volunteer Company.
