THE LATE F. M. BECROFT

The Numurkah Leader says: -- It is with the most sincere regret that we chronicle the death of Mr. Frank May Becroft, of the Cumberland Hotel, Wunghnu. For a lengthy period Mr. Becroft had been suffering from phthisis, and more than once he had been so bad that it was feared he would never leave his room again. A few weeks ago he became so ill that he had to remain in his room, and about 2 o'clock on Saturday morning the last call came and he passed peacefully away. The remains were interred in the Wunghnu cemetery on Sunday, when there was a very great assemblage to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased. The fraternity of Masons paid the last honors to their late brother, both the Nathalia and Numurkah lodges being largely represented, the brethren marching in front of the hearse to the cemetery. The scene at the grave was most impressive. The last sad rites of the Church of England were performed in a most solemn manner by the Rev. P. J. Edwards, and the beautiful and touching Masonic service was read most feelingly by Wor. Bro. A. W. Pollock. The pall-bearers were Bros. R. Fairman, W. M., (Nathalia Lodge), W. A. Campbell, D. McClure, McCormack, J. Sutherland and F. Moss. The mortuary arrangements were carried out by Mr. A. Dunn in a most suitable manner.

Frank Becroft came to this district more than 20 years ago, and resided between Numurkah, Wunghnu and Nathalia for most of that time. He was first employed by Mr. S. Callander in the butchering business and subsequently by Mr. A. Kinnaird and Mr. G. M. Woodhouse, of Wunghnu. In 1886 he became a member of the police force from which, owing to failing health, he received his discharge about 12 months ago. As an officer of the police he performed his duties faithfully but courteously, and in his private capacity he was always ready to assist a good cause and many who had been left in distress had to thank Frank Becraft for a helping hand. Whilst in the constabulary he was first stationed in Nathalia, and was afterwards in charge at Bendoc, Edi, Eldorado, Swanpool, and Wunghnu. When he retired from the service he purchased the Cumberland Hotel, Wunghnu, and during the few months of his control of that property proved himself to be a hospitable and popular landlord. He had the somewhat unique experience during his life of being twice stuck up by bushrangers -- once by Power and subsequently by the Kelly gang. He retained a vivid recollection of the incidents and could relate them in a most entertaining manner. Mr. Becroft leaves a wife and three children to mourn the loss of a good and loving husband and father.

• Marriage: Euroa Advertiser. Wedding at Milawa.
The usual quietude of the township was dispelled recently by the number of vehicles and pedestrians all bent on reach ing the one place-and that the residence of Mr. James Gardiner. The large assemblage was easily accounted for when it was takedn into consideration that the marriage of Mr. Frank M. Becroft, second son of Mr. W. Becroft, Longwood, to Miss C. Frances Gardner, youngest daughter of an old, and, widely respected resident, Mr. Colin Gardner, was to be solemnised. At 11 o'clock a procession of twenty vehicles was formed, headed by the one containing the happy party, and drove to the church. An arch of sprays and flowers had been tastefully erected over the gate way leading to the sacred edifice, the interior of which was very nicely deco rated with wreaths of choice fragrant flowers by the skilful hands of some of the young ladies of the district with whom the young bride was a universal favorite. The building was crowded to excess by an audience that took the greatest interest in the ceremony. "The bride, attired in vieux blue cashmere, trimmed with moire to match, long 'train, bodice draped with tulle, and caught with sprays of orange blossom, also wearing the'custotmary wreath and veil, was given away by her father. Miss Kerr,' wearing' a tasteful -dress of white embroidered muslin with moire sash, discharged the duties of the position of first bridesmaid, while Mr. S. Becroft acted in the capacity of best man. The other- bridesmaids were: Miss Carrie Becroft and Miss Susie Pratt, in elegant dresses of cream muslin trimmed with lace and the rosemary and allauie: Gardner. The ceremony concluded, the happy couple proceeded down the church amid showers of rice; Miss Scott playing the Wedding Bells March with her usual ability. The congratulations and hearty expressions for their future welfare having been bestowed the retirn was commenced. Arrived at the residence, more showers of rice were scattered and additional congra tulations given. After a short interval, the guests, to the number nearly 130 sat down to a sumptuous breakfast, tastefully laid and including tie choicest things that the most fastidious could desire. Ample justice having been done, the Rev. A. M'Donald rose to propose " the health of the bride and bridegroom."' Musical honors accompanied the toast. Mr. F. Becroft suitably responded and thanked them for the kind expressions which they had accorded Mrs. Becroft and himself. The health of the bridesmaids was the next submitted. Mr. S. Becroft, on behalf of the bridesmaids, heartily thanked the company for the manner in which the toast had been received. The health of Mr. and Mrs. James Gardner was pro posed in a. eulogistic speech by- Mr." W. Bickerton. In the course of his remarks he mentioned that they were so well known in the district that it was needless for-him to enlarge on their good qualities. He asked them s-to drink long life. and pros perity to Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Gardner. Mr. Gardner having replied in a neat little speech, Mr. G. Brown rose to pro pose the health of'the bride and bride groom's parents. He had been acquainted with Mr. Colin Gardner for upwards of 30years and he was one of his(the speaker's) best and sincerest friends. He had been fortunate to obtain a good share of this world's goods and had reared his family in such a manner that they reflected credit on him i. The speaker concluded by remark inghewas positive all present would. en dorse the remarks expressed by him. (Alpplause.) Mr. Colin Gardner replying returned thanks for hearty expressions accorded Mrs. C. Gardner and self, and also for the congratulatory remarks passed towards Mr. and Mrs. Becroft. The list was exhausted by a hearty vote of thanks to the Rev. A. Macdonald, and the due acknowledgement thereof. At 3 o'clock the newly-wedded couple left amid a route to Melbourne where the honeymoon will be spent. The bride's travelling dress was of myrtle green satin, trimined with serpent green silk. Several buggies ac companiedt them to the station, where rice was again plentifully scattered. During the afternoon some songs and duets were carefully rendered by the Misses Becroft,. Scott, Pratt, Ferguson and Mrs. F. Powell, and G. Ferguson. Amotig the gelmtlemen who sang were Messrs. Ellis, Brown, Powell, Becroft, Ferguson, and Kerr. The presents: were very numerous, valuable and were admired greatly.- Wangaratta Chronicle.
