on Green Island. A Company 35 Battalion "B" Force Took part in the fighting at Vella Lavella and Green Island. The report by Captain J H Jackson gives a dramatic description of the action against the Japanese forces in which a number of New Zealanders were killed and wounded. Colin returned to New Zealand and in October 1944 was posted to the reserve list and saw no further action. He went on to become Head of the Scripture Union in New Zealand, and moved to the United States, where he continued his work with SU and also led the work there. He returned to New Zealand having spent a life time of Christian Service. His daughter Jennifer Hendrickson has helped with information on her Father.• He had a religion from 1945 to 1955. Scripture Union is an international organisation now present in over 130 countries worldwide. It started in England in 1867 when Josiah Spiers started 'Special Services' for children in Islington, London. It was a completely new approach to work with children and quickly grew into the Children's Special Service Mission.
1945-1955
Colin Becroft was appointed to succeed John Laird and the work continued to grow. Children's evangelists were appointed.
1955-1962
Bruce Lumsden, an Australian, succeeded Colin Becroft when he left to direct Scripture Union work in Australia. The work of Crusaders reached a peak. 6% of secondary students throughout New Zealand belonged to Crusader groups. 4% attended meetings each week. Crusaders was one of the largest voluntary, teenage organisations in New Zealand. Bruce Lumsden was a forward thinker in children's ministries, but apart from beach missions this aspect of the work did not grow because staff workers could not be found.• Immigrated: 10 Feb 1948, New Zealand. HASTINGS (Rev. J. Russell Grave).\emdash The looked forward visit of Rev. M. J. Eade has come and gone, but left us richer in our spiritual experience and missionary zeal. Mr. Eade addressed a B.C. rally of past and present members, and his evening service, followed by the screening of movie films of our missionary work in India, was followed with keen interest. At the invitation of our Men's Club, the other church clubs in town had been invited to attend a men's meeting. The large gathering of men listened attentively to Mr. Eade's picture of the Indian situation as we see it to-day, and we were all encouraged by the healthy condition of our field. A visit from Mr. Colin Becroft, M. A., who occupied our pulpit on a Sunday evening, gave us an encouraging report on the Crusader Movement. Bible Class Week was a time of added activity among its members. Mr. Howard Knight of the C. I. M. brought a cheering message of his society's work. A well organised congregational social of games, competitions and movie films was thoroughly enjoyed by young and old. Many of our folk are sick, and we pray for them a speedy recovery to health. P.
