Events

• Her obituary was published in the Daily News on 4 Apr 2023. Jane Kathryn Becraft, 96, Greensburg, Indiana passed away on Friday, March 31, 2023, at Heritage House in Greensburg. Janie was born on August 2, 1926, in Summitville, Indiana to Philip Lewis and Leta Mary (Garrison) Sachse. Her parents were divorced when Janie was two years old. Her mother married Herman Hutchinson two years later and he became a loving stepfather to Janie. They moved to Decatur County where her stepfather worked on the railroad. The family could ride on the train for free and Janie loved the train rides. She loved to travel to Summitville often, where her Grandmother Jane Garrison and her Uncle Herman Garrison lived and spend the weekend with them. She rode on the train from the time she was just a little girl. Everyone that worked on the train knew her as Black Jack's daughter. The men who worked with her stepfather were very protective of her. These were memories she cherished. This picture of Janie was taken when she was 18 years old. She had recently started working at the Racine Shirt Factory in Greensburg and this was the first professional picture she had taken. A new photographer in Greensburg, prominently displayed this picture of Janie for more than a year in his store window on the square. He told everyone; this was the picture that he was the most proud of. Janie was a shy girl, and she was very embarrassed with the attention she received. She lived at this time in an apartment right off the square. Everywhere she walked, people would stop and point saying, "There's the girl in the window!" Later, the Shirt Factory would become the Carol Cook Dress Factory. Sewing was Janie's passion. She became well known in the area, as the lady who sewed and then sold Barbie Doll clothes. She sold these for years and eventually started sewing and selling Cabbage Patch doll clothes which were then very popular. Janie eventually started quilting and made many quilts for her family. Janie married Willard Russell Becraft on June 17, 1950, in the Connersville Baptist Church. He preceded her in death on June 4, 1990. She is survived by her daughters, Roxanne (Jerry) Scheidler and Cheryl Kay (the late Jim) Small. Grandchildren Matt (Michelle) Scheidler, Kathie (Clint) Wells, Jon (Elizabeth) Scheidler, Christy (Derek) Karl, Vince (Debbie) Small and Vanessa Small. Great Grandchildren Cecilia Scheidler, Clare Scheidler, Erica Scheidler, Steven Scheidler, Brendan Wells, Emily Scheidler, Benjamin Scheidler, Jonathan Scheidler Jr., Caleb Scheidler, Maverick Small and Charlie Small. The family of Jane Kathryn Becraft wants to thank the beautiful people at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Greensburg for their wonderful care. Janie was a covid survivor. Private services were held at the Bass and Gasper Funeral Home in Westport, Indiana and burial was in the South Park Cemetery with Pastor George Willette officiating.
