Class of '53 Inducted 1994
One of the greatest basketball players in Cortland history, Ronald Becraft shattered school scoring records for the Red Dragon powerhouse hoop squads in the early 1950's. A Dean's List Student, he was senior class treasurer and an artist for the 1953 yearbook.

Becraft served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55 when he also won honors as an all-fort basketball forward.

A Suffern, NY, native, he excelled on local basketball teams for years and was inducted into the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.
Becraft taught secondary social studies from 1955 to 1962 in the Clarkstown (NY) Schools. Between 1962-69, he was a guidance counselor and later a principal in the Pearl River (NY) Schools. From 1971 until his retirement in 1987, he was the assistant to the superintendent in the Pearl River Schools.

Active in UNICEF and United Way over the years, Becraft has been a consultant to a New York City law firm since 1987.

Elected in 1988 ... graduated from Suffern H.S. in 1949 ... a second-team All-County basketball player who averaged 9.8 points per game to help lead the Mounties to their fourth straight Rockland PSAL title in 1948 ... also lettered in baseball as a pitcher and first baseman ... at Cortland State, he led his team to 29 consecutive victories and established a school scoring record (since broken) of 16.6 points per game .

Becraft went on to star in local amateur basketball leagues ... in 1956, he averaged 40 points per game, and in 1957 he led County Welding to the league crown by averaging 29 points per game ... that same year, he led a Rockland all-star unit against the New York Knicks; Becraft outscored the Knicks' renowned Connie Simmons in that game ... he once scored 56 points in a game.
