• His obituary was published in the Press & Sun-Bulletin on 3 Jun 2024. With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Richard Becraft of Binghamton, NY, who unexpectedly left us on June 1st at the age of 76 in the comfort of his home. Rich is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Linda, his daughters Jen (Steve) Glaize, Gina Becraft (Dan), and Jacqui (Phil) March. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Abby Glaize, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and his Aunt Alice Kabat. Rich was predeceased by his parents, Gerald and Regina Becraft, his parents-in-law, Gerald and Frances Chier, along with his Aunt Betty Kabat, Uncle Pete Kabat, Uncle Tom (Hazel) Kabat, and Aunt Ann (Bill) Metzar.
Rich held over 39 years of service at Binghamton University until retiring as a Lieutenant in the Law Enforcement Division within the Department of Public Safety. During his tenure, Rich served as an Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor, mentoring new law enforcement officers. His humor, dedication to his work, and willingness to always help others set him apart as a true leader in his field.
Rich's passion for cars and motorsports was evident in every aspect of his life. During his teenage years at Chenango Forks High School, Rich began racing go-carts and detailing vehicles for relatives, neighbors, and friends. After graduation, he furthered his education at Broome Community College while continuing to hone his enthusiasm for cars at his wife's uncle, Leo Fendick's car dealership. Whether tinkering with his machines or enjoying the thrill of driving them, Rich had a deep passion for the motor world. Rich could often be found reading periodicals about latest motor trends and technology, discussing real-world politics, or outside mowing or snowplowing for family, friends, and neighbors, frequently accompanied by his beloved, predeceased Newfoundland companion, Benny.
Rich was a man of unwavering dedication and hard work. He tirelessly provided for his family, always going above and beyond to support his loved ones. His quick-witted sense of humor was always present, and his kindness and generosity knew no bounds. May he rest in peace, knowing that he was cherished and loved by those whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you honor Rich's memory by extending a helping hand to a neighbor, friend, or family member.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday June 8th at 12 Noon at the Barber Memorial Home 428 Main Street Johnson City. Burial will be in Glen Castle Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday at 10am until the time of the service.
