Jacob Charley Shanks, 71, of 118 Joe Street, died at 11:50am Saturday at his residence after a brief illness.
Born in Hawkins County, Tennessee, Mr. Shanks had resided in Dayton for 25 years. He was the owner and operator of Shanks' Garage at 122 Joe Street.
Surviving are his wife, Lydia; four daughters, Alice of Dayton, Mrs Bonnie Hartley and Mrs. Louise Hartley, both of Roseville, Michigan, and Mrs. Loraine Kohnke of Williams Lake, B C; four sons, Harry H., Charles and Theodore, all of Dayton, and Glenn W. of Hollywood, Cal.; two sisters, Mrs. Ted Gray of Greenville, Tenn., and Miss Jane Shanks of New York City; four brothers, G H, Everett, both of Dayton, Walter of Wichita, Kansas, and Lawrence of Wayne, Michigan; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2pm Friday at the Walter Funeral Home, 501 South Main Street, by Rev Stanley Jeffery. Burial will be in Glen Haven Memorial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 9pm Thursday

She was born in Winchester, Ky, June 30, 1909.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth T; daughter, Alice E. Swanner; one daughter-in-law Dorothy Shanks; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her son Ted, and first husband Charles Shanks.
She was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Services will be held Wednesday, 1pm, McColaugh Funeral Home, 826 N. Detroit St., Xenia. Pastor Paul Hock officiating.
Burial in Glen Haven Memorial Park, Donnelsville, Friends may visit the funeral home 7-9 pm Tuesday.
