Died in Cottage Grove, Minn., Thursday morning, April 25, 1901, Louisa Marion, wife of Rev. William Gill of this city and for twelve years form 1862 pastor of the Congregational church.
Mr. Gill who had been seriously ill went to Cottage Grove about three weeks ago to be treated by Dr. Steen, an old-time friend. Mrs. Gill accompanied her husband and while he regained his strength she was stricken with pneumonia and passed away in a little over a week. She was conscious and true to herself, solicitous for others up to the very last moment.
The deceased was the daughter of Aquila and Ann Becraft and was born in Bourbon county, Kentucky, Feb 18, 1831, he parents moving to Jacksonville, Ill., during her early childhood. She graduated from two colleges, one in Jacksonville, Ill., and one in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Gill being a student inthe Illinois college met her in Sunday school work, the acquaintance resulting in their marriage, Oct. 20, 1863, Mrs. Gill then beginning in the second year of his pastorate at River Falls. This was their first parish. Their first home was in a part of the present residence of President Brier. When Mr. Gill started after his bride, Deacon Burr, who knew the errand the pastor was on, remarked that he trusted he had "left for good." No wish was more royally fulfilled. A dozen or more are still who were in the little class she conducted for years in the old Academy. They, with many more here and in other parishes, will always treasure the memory of her gentle and faithful instructions. She had rare skill in winning people, not only to herself, but to the Christian life, one of her pupils making the suggestive remark: "Mrs. Gill led me into the Christian life so that I enjoy it."
For thirty-two years she was devoted and unremitting in her home and parish duties, spending with her husband twelve years in River Falls, Wis., seven in Mantorville, Minn., one in Alexandria, Minn., five in Cottage Grove, Minn., two in Glyndon, Minn., and five in Roberts, New Richmond and Kinnickinnic, Wis., the last few years being restfully spent in the old home on Fourth street, this city. The funeral was held in the Congregational church on Sunday afternoon
_______________ present being voiced by the pastor:"Give her the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates." Prof. Herbert Gill of Montana College at Bozeman, with his wife arrived Saturday p.m. and will remain until next week when Mr. Gill goes back to his school duties returning here after the middle of June to spend the summer with his wife and father. The other son, Wm. H. Gill is in Honolulu and was unable to be present at the funeral. River Falls Journal 5-2-1901.
