Lela Vetrice Goins, age 101 and 7 months, of Memphis, Missouri, passed away August 26, 2015, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis.
She was born January 27, 1914, in rural Scotland County, Missouri, to William and Bessie Lee (Mathes) Becraft.
She grew up in rural Scotland County and attended Barker school for eight years.
On December 24, 1935, she married Brayton Hougland at Bloomfield, Iowa and to this union a son, Estel Ray Hougland, was born. Brayton passed away and Lela married Edwin Philip Goins on March 14, 1948, at Los Angeles, California. Following their marriage, they moved to Mariposa, California, living there a number of years before returning to Memphis.
Vetrice was a devoted mother, housewife and a beautician. She worked with her husband in their carpentry business, enjoyed raising gardens and she raised an orchard which included olive trees. She also enjoyed playing the piano.
She was a member of the First Christian Church. Vetrice had a passion for the Bible, having acquired an enviable knowledge of it. She was the gracious winner of a Scripture competition some years ago.
She is survived by a sister, Doreen Moore, of Memphis, Missouri; three sisters-in-law, Helen Becraft, Madelene Becraft and Maxine Slavin; five grandchildren: Sherry Walters of Mariposa, California; Kathie Milhalik of Bend, Oregon; Susan Bowen who is serving in the United States Navy in Marysville, Washington; Nicole Friedburg of Portland, Oregon; Curtis Hougland of Bend, Oregon, a grandson-in-law, Armando Miranda of Bloomington, California and many nieces and nephews.
Vetrice was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, her son, Estel Hougland; her daughter-in-law, Ruth Hougland; three sisters: Florence Weilbrenner, Marjorie Evans, Estelene Becraft; six brothers: Lowell Becraft, Russell Becraft, Robert Becraft, Millard Becraft, Eugene Becraft, Don Becraft and a granddaughter, Lela Miranda.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 31, 2015 at the Memphis Funeral Home with Pastor Dee Wiley and Brother Jack Sumption officiating. Music was provided by Susan Burns, pianist. Burial followed in the Barker Cemetery in rural Scotland County.
Casket bearers were Mike Becraft, Dennis Becraft, Bill Cassels, LaVern Weilbrenner, Kellie Weilbrenner and Karla McCollum.
Visitation, with family present to greet relatives and friends, were at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
To honor the memory of Vetrice, a memorial may be made to the Shiloh Christian Children's Home or Barker Cemetery and may be left at or mailed to Memphis Funeral Home, 378 South Market Street, Memphis, Missouri 63555.
