• Event: 1851, Dowagiac City, Cass Co, MI. The Dowagiac Baptist church was organized in 185 1, the first trustees Ijeing 1. S. Becraft. D. AL Heazlett, Archibald Jewell, A. IT Reed, E. Ballenge, Jacob) Allen, .S. E. Dow. Isaac Cross, H. B. Miller.
The present building was erected in 1852. Present membership is 132. Pastors since 1880: E. R. Clark. N. R. Sanborn, H. A. Rose, G. M. Hudson, H. F. Alasales, Ross Matthews, A. M. Bailey and .M. I''. Sanborn, present pastor. In 1900 a $1,600 parsonage was erected on the church property. In 1905 the church building was remodeled and enlarged at an expense of $2,000. At present there is no indebt- edness and the work seems to be advancing.

• Biography: Isaiah S. Becraft, was a native of New York and came to Cass county, Michigan, in 1848, as one of the first settlers of Dowagiac. He was connected with mercantile interests here for many years and contributed in a substantial measure to the material progress and to the upbuilding and advancement of the city. He held many offices and was one of the prominent and influential residents of Dowagiac. At the time of his death, which occurred in 1864, he was serving as deputy provost marshal and special agent for the United States secret service. In politics he was a stalwart Republican from the organization of the party and fraternally was a prominent Mason, who exemplified in his life the beneficent spirit of the craft. His death occurred when he was fifty-two years of age. His wife, who in her maidenhood was Caroline Wallace, was a native of Pennsylvania and a daughter of James and Betsy (Belknap) Wallace. Mrs. Becraft lived to the advanced age of seventy-two years. In their family were seven children, six of whom reached adult age.

• Biography: 1882. I. S. BECRAFT.
In 1849, I. S. Becraft and family became settlers here. They boarded with the McOmbers until Mr. Becraft built, near the Methodist Church, a comfort. able dwelling (the first house in Dowagiac having an L or wing.) Mr. Becraft was a carpenter and builder, and, in connection with Daniel Heazlett, reared the Baptist Church and many other buildings in Dowagiac. He was born in Orange County, N. Y., in 1811, and died in 1865. His widow and a son, Julius O. Becraft, Deputy Postmaster, still reside in Dowagiac.

• Biography: "History of Cass Co., MI" (1905) by Glover, 1905. Isaiah married Caroline Wallace and they had four children, of which Cynthia was the youngest. One brother, W. F., was still alive in 1905 and resided in Augusta, Kalamazoo Co., MI. After Caroline died, Isaiah married again and had five more children from that union. Isaiah moved to Dowagiac in June, 1849, and was prominent in the public affairs in an early day, serving as postmaster of Dowagiac, also as deputy sheriff and as provost marshal during the period of the Civil War.

Becraft, was a native of New York and came to Cass county, Michigan, in 1848... At the time of his death, which occurred in 1864... His wife, who in her maidenhood was Caroline Wallace, was a native of Pennsylvania and a daughter of James and Betsy (Belknap) Wallace. Mrs. Becraft lived to the advanced age of seventy-two years.
