Everett James Becraft, 87, of Lakeview, died Sept. 12, 2002 in Lakeview of complications related to diabetes.
Private family services were held Sept. 12 and a memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Lakeview at 1 p.m. on Sept. 21. The Rev. Robert Badgley will officiate. Cremation was performed by Klamath Cremation Service. O'Hair and Riggs Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
He was born Aug. 14, 1915 to Cyrus and Mary (Albertson) Becraft in Lakeview.
He was the youngest of four children and grew up on the family homestead in the Westside area of Lakeview. He lettered in football at Lakeview High School and following graduation pursued an engineering degree at Oregon State University. He was also involved in the R.O.T.C. program. After two years he left the university to help run the family farm.
He was a corporal in the Marine Corps during World War II, serving as an airplane mechanic in the Pacific from 1944 to 1946. After the war he returned to Lakeview and raised cattle, winter wheat and alfalfa.
He married his first wife, Dorothy, in 1954. They had one son, James, and later divorced.
He married his second wife, Elba Efird of Lakeview, on Oct. 1, 1977 in the Lutheran church in Newport. They lived in Newport, where he worked in real estate, until 1979. They then returned to Lakeview, where he ranched until 1989. After selling the ranch, they moved to Waldport and later Klamath Falls. They returned to Lakeview in 2001.
He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, and rock hunting. He also liked to repair old tractors and other farm equipment. He enjoyed Crater Lake, Yocum Valley, Goose Lake Valley, the high desert and the Oregon Coast. He enjoyed working out-of-doors, reading books dealing with current events, the history of the western U.S., and railroads. When he lived in Klamath Falls, he enjoyed having breakfast Tuesday mornings with the Retired Railroad Bunch.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Farm Bureau, and the Elks Lodge in Lakeview. He served for several years as a board member for the Westside School District and was a member of the Westside Grange.
He is survived by his wife; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Barb Becraft of Kingsport, Tenn.; step-children, Renee' Kohler of Tulelake, Joel Efird of Lakeview, Kathryn Merrill of Beaverton, Ore., Leon Efird of Baker City, Ore., and Carolyn Morton and her husband Jim of Corvallis, Ore.; grandchildren, Eric, Nich-olas, Scott, Carrie, Sami, David, Jamie, Michael, Duane, Debbie, Jason, Angela and Sheila; eight great-grandchildren; nephews, Dennis Dupuy and his wife Marilyn of Klamath Falls and Bob Clark and his wife Phyllis of Medford; numerous great-nieces and -nephews; and former classmate and friend of 80 years, Schubal Lamb of Lakeview.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; sisters, Velma Schwartz and Stella Clark; brother, Albert Reizenstein; and niece, Lillian Sundet.
