BETHEL - A long-time Georgetown High School teacher died in a chain-reaction crash involving two motorcycles and two other vehicles on Ohio 125 near here late Thursday afternoon.

Anthony "Tony" Becraft, 45, of Georgetown, died at the scene, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He and a friend, Timothy Manning, 43, of Georgetown, were on their Harley-Davidsons when the accident occurred at 5:30 p.m. Manning was taken to University Hospital, where he is in critical condition.

The Ohio State Patrol said the chain reaction began when an eastbound car driven by Joan E. Stevens, 62, of Georgetown slowed for traffic just east of Bethel. Terri Wilson, 35, of Georgetown was driving a pickup truck eastbound when it hit the back of Stevens' car.

The truck then slid left, hitting the two westbound motorcycles. Neither motorcycle driver was wearing a helmet.

Stevens and her passenger, 11-year-old Jessica Stevens, were not injured. Wilson was treated at the scene and released. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, the patrol said. The incident remains under investigation.

Becraft of Georgetown had been an industrial technology teacher at the high school for 20 years. Spring break started today, but grief counselors will be available when teachers and students return the last week of April.

"He was the kind of teacher that was typically the students' favorite," said Michael Smith, superintendent of Georgetown Exempted Village Schools. "He challenged all of his kids and his colleagues every day. He drove them to be the best they could be, drove them to perform at their optimum level. He really reached a lot of students that were not scholars."

His death leaves the future of the school's industrial technology program in question.

"He was bigger than just an individual on our staff. He created his program, and I don't think (we're) going to be able to replace him or be able to maintain that program without him," Smith said.

"The manual arts have fallen into a lower priority status with the state, with all of the testing and the academic emphasis. We don't know what direction we really need to go now. There are very few teachers out there with that certification, in my experience, to replace him."

Among his survivors are two grown children; his mother, Joyce Becraft, who is a district elementary school secretary; and his father, Ray Becraft, a Village Council member, head of the Brown County Chamber of Commerce and former Georgetown mayor.

Funeral arrangements are pending with Cahall Funeral Home, Georgetown.
