Attended Fairweather Green School (age 5-9, lunch at school cost 2d) & Whetley L School (age 9-14, lunch at home). He won books for 3 years running for religious instruction. He liked school; his favorite class was arithmetic. His favorite games were soccer & cricket. His friend, Harry Davidson, was born the same day as Dad. They were on the Whetley L. soccer team together. He remembers Albert Geldard (my mother's (Audrey Emmett) cousin as a star. His mother gave him a soccer ball for his b'day & he dribbled it all the way to school. He took a lot of care with it; remembers using a pump to blow it up. 1932 At age 11 Dad had a small paper round. He says he was a small child, then sprouted up in his teens (was 6 ft tall). He was on the vaulting team (top man) the night before he had a burst appendix. He developed peritonitis and was weeks in the hospital and months off school 1933 At 12 he had big paper round w. bag across his shoulder. Said he did very well at Christmas in gifts & money. He remembers 2 women (older) who gave him £32, which he used to buy a radio for his mother. 1937 At 16 he went to Squire's Gate Holiday Camp in Blackpool via bus. Also won 2 tix to Opera House in Blackpool where he saw Max Miller & Tommy Finn who later performed in London during the war.
