Ernest emigrated to Canada in 1912 and settled in Hamilton. He had several driving jobs in Canada. He joined the 92nd O.S. Battalion (Highlanders) C.E.F. in January 1916. He was discharged as medically unfit on March 16th 1916. He visited England with his wife and son William in 1919 returning home from London on S.S. Corsican on 20th April 1920. On his shipping papers he gave his occupation as Forge worker and his address in Canada as 3 Hill Street, Hamilton. His brother Herbert wrote in 1993 that he went to Canada at the age of 14 to work on a farm. His sister Selina Hetty can also remember him going but not the date. The 1901 census shows him living at Appleby with his parents and 3 siblings,

Elsie went to Canada firstly in 1912 then returned to England to visit relatives in 1919. On April 20th 1920 she returned to Canada with her husband and son
