Notes: Marriage (Doris Lilly Dogget):

Unionville Home Society, Annual Report 2004/2005

Richard and Doris

Residents Richard and Doris Baycroft are
also looking forward to the move and into
their much larger living space. Married for
62 years, they will have adjoining rooms,
enabling them to share one as a bedroom
and convert the other into a sitting area.
Like many Union Villa residents, Doris
and Richard are war veterans, giving extra
special significance to the generous donation
to the UHS of the Unionville Veterans'
Hall by the Unionville and District Veterans'
Association.

Born in Saskatchewan, Richard enlisted
in the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry in
Hamilton, Ontario in 1940, and Doris enlisted
in Portsmouth England with ACHACH in
1941. When Richard was sent to England
for training, they met and were married in
April 1943.

As the war was coming to an end, Doris
and their 11/2 year old daughter, Jennifer,
boarded the Aquatania in Scotland and
headed to Canada to stay with Richard's
parents in New Toronto. Not long after,
Richard sailed over on the Queen Mary,
making it just in time for the birth of their
second daughter, Diane, and then in 1946,
they welcomed the arrival of their third
daughter, Sharon. A talented carpenter,
Richard built his family homes in Toronto,
Orillia and Coldwater, Ontario.

The Baycroft's have many wonderful
memories of their 62-year marriage, but
what's Richard's fondest memory? Without
hesitation, he smiles and points to his wife;
"Doris, she's my fondest memory".
