Corporal Gene Baycroft
The Governor General's Horse Guards
Orillia, Ontario
Mr. Gene Baycroft was born on July 30, 1924, in Etobicoke, Ontario. At age 15 he became a member of the militia in Fort York where he played the bugle. He enlisted in Toronto on August 13, 1941. With a brother already overseas, Mr. Baycroft was very eager to enlist and lied about his age by changing his birth year to 1922 in order to meet the requirements.
Mr. Baycroft served for two years in Italy with the Governor General's Horse Guards, specifically the 3rd Armoured Recce Regiment. He was a crew commander in the regiment's light tanks and later a wireless operator in a Sherman tank.
Upon returning to Canada following the war, Mr. Baycroft worked in the family business as a funeral director but soon discovered that "the funeral business was not my business." He then began work at AVRO where he was a supervisor of production control for the company's experimental flight desk area. He worked on the prestigious AVRO Arrow until the project's close in 1959. Mr. Baycroft subsequently held a variety of positions, including owning his own service station, before joining Fahralloy Mines where he worked for 25 years.
Since retiring, Mr. Baycroft has become increasingly active in the Ontario Marine Heritage Committee. He has taught scuba diving since 1972 and often participates in underwater archaeology digs, including the recent excavation of a land-locked wreck in Southampton, Ontario. Mr. Baycroft is also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Masonic Lodge. He and his wife, Patricia, have four children, 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
